Moving Toward a Better BNIM with JUST Label 2.0
| |
The JUST Label is more than a certification program. Instead, it serves as a platform for businesses to increase transparency about social equity, how employees are treated, supplier diversity, and their community impact. BNIM recently completed our JUST Label 2.0. This process was filled with reflection, documentation, conversation, and measurement that has provided a combination of qualitative and quantitative assessments to move us toward a better BNIM.
BNIM’s JUST Label 2.0 will be our baseline, providing clarity on how to systematically measure the social and environmental justice of our business practices while creating a roadmap for the future. Taking steps to understand our values, how we exceed or come up short on our goals, and the impact we have on our communities is key to helping us contribute to a more equitable and just world.

BNIM is partnering with Reconciliation Services for the Reveal Strength Campaign to transform their existing building on the corner of 31st and Troost in Kansas City, MO.
Reconciliation Services has served the urban core of Kansas City for over three decades, driven by dignity, community, and advocacy to address needs for affordable food access, safe gathering spaces, and building positive connections. The Reveal Strength Campaign's goal is to secure the remaining $4 million needed to renovate the building from the ground up. This project aims to create living-wage jobs, increase social and mental health services, and increase equitable access to programming that connects neighbors and strengthens community engagement. Housing should be accessible to everyone. As should good design.
Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation set out to develop a housing project that embodied this concept, going above and beyond just creating new apartments. Guided by these project goals, BNIM designed welcoming, peaceful, and supportive apartments ready to serve San Diego seniors with chronic medical needs who have experienced homelessness.
The Ivy Senior Apartments were created using the Housing First model which has prioritized creating stable and healthy housing coupled with supportive resident services and resources provided by PATH, St. Paul's PACE and Alpha Project Home Finder. M O R E

How does design work as a funding tool?
Housing affordability has become strained across the country, and specifically in in-demand cities like San Diego. Despite the dramatic need for affordable housing, it can be difficult to develop. The process often requires finding multiple funding sources, both public and private, in addition to navigating traditional development challenges. This reality requires affordable housing developers and advocates to find and utilize every tool to get a project off the ground.
In the development, design, and construction of the Keeler Court Apartments in San Diego’s Southcrest neighborhood, BNIM helped support Community HousingWorks (CHW) of San Diego leverage design and sustainability to receive funding from California’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program.
