Kevin Taaffe named interim chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering

Kevin Taaffe is the new interim chair of Clemson University’s Department of Industrial Engineering. Taaffe, the Harriet and Jerry Dempsey Professor of Industrial Engineering, takes the place of Jeffrey Kharoufeh, who will be supporting the development of a strategic hiring plan in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.

Human-trafficking networks targeted in new research

Professor Tom Sharkey, is working with a team to develop models that would be aimed at disrupting sex trafficking networks. Research funding by the National Science Foundation will be based at Clemson University.

Advanced manufacturing and mobility seen as significant trends in 2021

Paris Stringfellow, a program director with the Clemson University Center for Advanced Manufacturing, is helping advanced manufacturers upgrade operations with cybersecurity in mind. David Clayton, executive director of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research, is supporting the advancement of driverless technologies.

Working professionals to see new opportunities in online Master of Engineering program

About 300 students from five continents have received a Master of Engineering in industrial engineering as part of a program that has been offered entirely online since its launch in 2008.

Student Highlights

A Creative Inquiry group of students in Industrial Engineering recently had the culmination of a 2-year effort published in the peer-reviewed journal, Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology. The title of the article is, "Simulating the effects of operating room staff movement and door opening policies on microbial load."
In a research article recently accepted for publication in IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering, PhD student Amogh Bhosekar and recent MS graduate Kade Gilstrap investigate how hospitals can better leverage automation to improve material handling operations that support surgical services. The article was co-authored by Robert Allen, who received his PhD from Clemson University, and now works as a research engineer at Prisma Health.
