ICYMI: Students' Vaccination Questions Asked and Answered
In April, the Division of Student Affairs asked students via Instagram what questions they had regarding COVID-19 vaccinations.
Sac State student Nahom Semere '22 interviewed Janet Dumonchelle, Pharmacist-in-Charge, to discuss these questions and concerns, providing answers to what students want to know.
This interview can be viewed above and was shared via Instagram in May.
We encourage you to watch and share this video with students, to help them be informed and take advantage of this important next step towards returning to campus.
To further promote vaccinations to our student body, Sacramento State will be participating in the White House Vaccine Challenge. More information is coming soon. Stay Tuned!

Joy Stewart-James Honored with 2021 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service
Joy Stewart-James, Associate Vice President for Student Health and Counseling Services, was one of three individuals who recently received the 2021 President’s Medal of Distinguished Service for outstanding work in impacting the Sacramento State campus and beyond. This award is considered one of the university’s highest honors and highlights recipients for their commitment to bettering the university, higher education, or the common good. She will be receiving her medal in September 2021.
Stewart-James led Sacramento State’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among her life-saving efforts was partnering with the Sacramento County Department of Public Health and many on-campus partners to establish the University as a vaccination site and COVID-19 testing center. Operated by Student Health Center staff and supported by Sac State Nursing students and faculty, our clinic has vaccinated more than 19,000 members of the Hornet family (current and retired) and community members throughout Sacramento County.
These honors are typically bestowed at the University’s Spring Commencement ceremony, which was celebrated at CARmencement, a socially distanced on-campus car parade in 2021 due to the pandemic. The 2021 honorees will also be celebrated later this year. “I am so proud of Dr. Stewart-James and her team. Very few members of our Hornet family realize how much extra work this has been for Joy and her team. Their dedication and resilience have been truly inspiring. I’m very grateful to President Nelsen for honoring her with this prestigious award,” says Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Ed Mills.
For more information on all of the winners, visit the Sac State Newsroom.

SASEEP Launches Speak to Lead Program to Support Equity Students’ Public Speaking and Communication Skills
If you know of any students looking to improve their public speaking and leadership skills as well as gain the confidence to speak up, invite them to come and learn with Speak to Lead.
The vast majority of people (75%) rank the fear of public speaking as their number one anxiety, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. For some people, this means fear of speaking to large groups. For others, it means speaking to even a single person if that person has the power to evaluate you, such as a supervisor, interviewer, or professor giving an oral exam.
Students are invited to attend the virtual Speak to Lead public speaking and leadership program summit on Friday, August 6, 2021, from 9 am to 2 pm. Each session and speaker will provide you the opportunity to radiate confidence in your communication and leadership abilities for personal growth and social intelligence through a variety of speaking situations.
Speakers from Toastmaster, faculty, and community partners will present on topics that include:
- The role of communication in leadership
- Strategies to reduce nerves and gain confidence
- Techniques to stay focused and keep your audience listening
- Preparing and delivering an effective PowerPoint presentation
- Making connection in one-on-one social interaction and group settings
- Understanding the role of culture in communication
Space is limited, so students are encouraged to sign up early. Interested students can register through the link below.

Technology Needs for Hybrid Work (On-campus and remote)
Hello Student Affairs Partners,
Happy summer! We would like to take this time to provide some information on the technology needs you may have for the summer while transitioning to work on-campus.
Here is some information to help with the transition.
- Mobile Devices: If you use a mobile device, you will experience some flexibility to work from the same device while on-campus and remotely from home.
- Webcam: If you have a webcam already checked out, please bring it with you on the days you’ll need it on campus. Please Note: Your mobile device will have an integrated camera that works just as well as a standalone one. Place the mobile device in a creative way for optimal video capture.
- Headset: If you have a headset already checked out, please bring it with you on the days that you’ll be needing it on campus.
- Keyboard & Mouse: If you need a keyboard and/or mouse, one will be provided to you by our team for your campus setup. If you prefer to continue using the mouse and keyboard you have at home, feel free to swap them out.
- Monitors: We understand the need for dual monitors for many of our areas. Unfortunately, we do not have enough to provide 4 per staff member (2 for home & 2 for on-campus). We will be doing our best (with available devices on hand) to accommodate your needs.
