Endless, Excessive and Inhumane: Solitary Confinement in U.S. Immigration Detention

Legal scholars, immigrant rights advocates, and health professionals have been calling for the end of solitary confinement in immigration detention for more than a decade. But the use of this inhumane treatment has only increased. In a recently published report, researchers from Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Physicians for Human Rights exposed the expansion of this practice in U.S. immigration detention through evaluation of litigated FOIA data and interviews with formerly detained immigrants who experienced solitary confinement.
SBS DIB Film Screening: Conscience Point

All HSPH staff, faculty, and students are invited to join the SBS Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee in collaboration with the FXB Center for Health & Human Rights for a hybrid screening of the documentary Conscience Point. Participants are welcome to join for all or part of the screening and will have the opportunity to interactively engage with the film content in real-time by responding to reflection questions. Conscience Point tracks the fractured history of one of the wealthiest zip codes in the U.S.: the Hamptons, where the Shinnecock Indian Nation were edged off their land over the course of hundreds of years, pushed onto an impoverished reservation, and condemned to watch their sacred burial grounds destroyed to make way for residential and commercial development.
Lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

Lenny Hayes (Sisseton Wahpeton-Oyate) is a Two Spirit social worker and community advocate. Lenny created Tate Topa Consulting to educate, bring awareness, and train organizations on how to provide proper services relating to Native American historical and intergenerational trauma, chemical and mental health issues, and Two Spirit community.
Native LGBTQ+ people have disproportionately higher rates of suicide, homelessness intimate-partner violence, trafficking, and violence related to sex work. The epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR) has global implications yet remains widely unaddressed. Join the Harvard Chan Native & Indigenous Student Health Forum for a talk and Q&A on issues and approaches to Two Spirit care.
