Congratulations to our Board Chair, Becky Stone, on receiving The Rosa Parks Award from The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County's Community Outreach Providing Empowerment (COPE), which recognizes outstanding women in our community. Award winners have fostered an inclusive culture in Asheville, advocated for a fair society for the marginalized, demonstrated nonviolent principles in advancing the lives of minority groups, and ignited activism for social justice.
We're so lucky to have you, Becky!

Please help us spread the word about this course

Aimee Kling, an ESOL tutor and Literacy Together board member, created this course designed to be accessible to adults with low levels of functional literacy and/or formal education, but anyone is welcome to participate. It will take place over 12 weeks, from May 20 to August 7.
Each week, students will have 2 class options: an in-person session every Monday at 9:00 a.m. and an online class they can complete on their own time, with new videos and content uploaded on Wednesdays. Students can participate as they are able -- attendance is not mandatory, but the more classes they attend, the more benefit they will gain from the class.
The course will consist of 3 main parts: a focus on forms of writing in the workplace; a focus on audiences; and a portfolio project that students will be able to present to potential employers when they complete the course.
Students will also have the opportunity to co-create the course, so that the course meets their specific career needs and goals. With any questions or for more information, please contact Aimee Kling at akling08@gmail.com.
Thanks for helping us spread the word!

I will forever love that my son's first piece of mail was from Dolly Parton. It was "The Little Engine That Could," which was perfect since his nickname is 'choo choo'. It's something I know we will look forward to every month.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library puts books into the hands and hearts of children worldwide. We're mailing a free book monthly to over 5,300 registered children in Buncombe County.

43 people have attended our online volunteer orientation meetings in 2024 so far! We've modified the format of our online orientation meeting to be more inclusive. Everyone is welcome to join us, from prospective volunteer tutors to community members to local business owners and nonprofits wanting to learn more about Literacy Together's work. This is what one participant said after a March orientation meeting:

I was surprised by a lot of the statistics about literacy rates, and had not considered just how strongly literacy is linked to poverty and family history. All the more eager to help!
