Dear Pilot parents and families,

Signs of spring are popping up around Portland – bulbs are blooming and the days are getting longer. While it is hard to believe that it has been a year since many of us packed our bags for remote work and school, I can’t help but feel hopeful with these signs of spring. I hope you find signs of hope wherever you are.

We recognize that many students have faced financial hardship due to COVID-19. Thanks to the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA), University of Portland has $1,336,002 earmarked for financial assistance to be distributed directly to students. Encourage your student to review information about eligibility and how to apply for financial assistance. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

FALL 2021 ON-CAMPUS HOUSING SELECTION

Current students were invited last month to apply for Fall 2021 housing. Current students who plan to live on campus for the 2021—2022 academic year who completed a housing application by the March 8 deadline will be eligible to participate in housing selection by class year. Learn more about the online selection process.

HELPING YOUR STUDENT WITH CAREER READINESS

Have you heard about "career readiness?" What does the term actually mean, and how can you help your student be prepared? Seth Igarta, Associate Director for Career Education & Academic Integration in the Career Education Center, shares what career readiness is and ways you can support your student.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Is your student interested in leadership opportunities and getting more involved on campus next year? Lead@UP is a common application process that allows students to explore and apply to multiple leadership positions across campus. Encourage your student to explore what positions are available and to apply by March 17.

LENT AND EASTER FAITH OPPORTUNITIES

Last month, UP shared a variety of ways students can participate in Campus Ministry this semester, both in-person and virtually. We also wanted to share opportunities for students to explore their faith during the Lent and Easter season. Learn more about Stations of the Cross, Holy Week offerings, and how families can live-stream liturgies.

MENTAL HEALTH IN A PANDEMIC

Many students continue to feel the impact of the pandemic on their mental health. With vaccines on the horizon but unavailable to many for now, James Peña, the Wellness Education & Prevention Programs Coordinator, shares a few strategies and resources that your student can use for self-care during this time.

CAP AND GOWN ORDERING

Senior families: has your student ordered their cap and gown? Commencement is quickly approaching on May 9, and undergraduate students are encouraged to order their cap and gown by March 21 to avoid incurring a late fee. Learn how your student can order their cap, gown, class ring, and announcements.

WHAT WE'RE READING

In January, we invited families to read along with this year’s ReadUP selection How to Be an Antiracist. We now invite you to “A Conversation with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi” on March 31 at 5:15 p.m. PST. This live webinar is free and open to all. Join Dr. Kendi as he engages the community in a dynamic conversation that addresses questions submitted by UP community members. Please register in advance.
