National Organization of Minority Architect Students (NOMAs) Conference
Last weekend, School Director Edward Mitchell and UC's NOMAs student leaders (Aliyah Murph, Jasmine Said, Ellie Dedrick, Lauren Weiss, and Remi Colwill) attended the annual NOMA conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The National Organization of Minority Architects was founded by 12 African American architects in 1971. Their desire for change came after they discussed the discriminatory policies that served as barriers for minorities who wanted to practice Architecture. Their mission: to fight for the equality of all people pursuing a career in the field of design. Today, NOMA has over 2,800 members and over 120 Chapters, who work in unison to fulfill the original mission of the 12 founders of NOMA. The conference, held annually, is an opportunity for nationwide city and student chapters to come together to learn, discuss, and celebrate!
The UC NOMA student chapter had the opportunity to participate in the events offered by the conference such as the student orientation, educational seminars, networking events, and even architectural tours. UC NOMAS attended a wide range of seminars that provoked insightful conversations surrounding social, historic, and futuristic topics in Architecture all while representing the college of DAAP! They also generated design proposal ideas during the Gensler student design charette. The students report that a highlight of the conference was making meaningful connections with other minorities who are already practicing in the field of Architecture as well as attending the Masquerade Ball in celebration of 100 years of McKissack & McKissack (the oldest minority and woman-owned design and construction firm in the US).

De Peter Yi
Lecture Held 10/19/2022
De Peter Yi joined the School of Architecture and Interior Design at DAAP as a new tenure-track Assistant Professor this past fall. His work finds design agency at the intersection of the social and the formal, from the scale of material details to the scale of the urban environment and beyond. The last few years have propelled a societal awakening around issues of equity, environment, and care that has simultaneously given designers a new urgency. How might we respond and work alongside contexts, audiences, and modes of engagement that previous models of practice have overlooked? In response, "Matrix to Parts" posits a design framework that scales both up and down from an emphasis on the single building to explore how systems of designed interventions create new forms of design agency. If you missed the lecture, it can be viewed here.
