Shorter days and less sunlight can affect mood and motivation, and for some people may lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Support your mental health this winter by staying connected, being active, keeping a regular sleep schedule, and eating nutritious foods with enough vitamin D. Spend time in daylight when possible, even if it means bundling up.
If symptoms of depression persist or worsen, talk to a healthcare provider. For immediate support, call or text 988.

In case you or someone you know needs protection from frigid temperatures this winter, keep these warming centers (pictured) in mind. There is also one overnight shelter in the Northland - opens when the temperature is 10 degrees or colder.

Winter weather - snow, ice, and sleet - can make roads hazardous. If you have to go out, be smart and be prepared.
Before you go: check tire pressure and tread, make sure lights and windshield wipers are working, and keep your gas tank (or EV charge) topped up. Stock your vehicle with winter essentials like an ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, blankets, flashlight, water, and snacks.
While driving: slow down and increase your following distance so you have more time to stop. Never crowd snow plows and use extra caution when passing. If you get stuck, stay with your vehicle and make it visible to rescuers.

Marketplace Deadline: January 15 |
Open enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplace® ends on January 15. After this deadline, the cost of getting coverage through the Marketplace in 2026 increases.
Don't forget - subsidies that previously kept premiums low expire at the end of 2025. Be prepared for higher costs in 2026. Don't let your current plan auto-renew without checking what your updated premiums will be. Take time to compare plans and choose what is doable for your situation.

Clay County Public Health received an Innovative Leadership Award at the Governmental Public Health Summit, hosted by the Missouri Public Health Institute in December. The award recognized Family Fun Day as an example of high-quality community engagement that health departments across the state can replicate.

|
Health Impact and Engagement staff delivered donation barrels from Harvesters to various locations in Excelsior Springs. Community members can donate shelf-stable foods and the items will stay and support families in town. Locations: Excelsior Springs Hospital, Excelsior Springs Community Center, City Hall, and Excelsior Springs Area Chamber of Commerce.

| CCPHC staff celebrated the end of the year with a holiday party! Thanks to the Social & Wellness committee for planning an event with delicious food and fun activities.

|
Community Advisory Council members celebrated the group's one year anniversary during their meeting on Dec. 10! This is a great group of people that come together to give feedback on public health needs and programming. This month, they chatted about what Northland health departments should keep in mind during strategic planning in 2026.
|
| Thanks to a partnership with MU Extension and C&C Produce, we were able to host a bonus food pantry event in December. Over 350 boxes of fresh and shelf-stable food were distributed to community members, providing families a boost before the holidays!
|
|
At the holiday party, 12 staff members were recognized for their years of service. Three celebrated 5 years, five celebrated 10 years, two celebrated 15 years, and two celebrated 20 years. We are grateful for the skill, effort, and care they bring to their roles!
