Mark Your Calendars for the PDX People Customer Service Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 25
To recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary, we'll hold the next PDX People Customer Service Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The winners in each category – along with their managers and members of our volunteer working committee – will be invited to attend the event in person while it's live-streamed on Facebook. To watch, head to the PDX Facebook page on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at noon.
One of our biggest strengths as an airport community is the diversity of our workforce. In celebration of Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re honored to have several guest presenters who will address the needs of older adults from an employment perspective.
Joyce DeMonnin, former AARP communications manager and AARP volunteer, will speak to the demographics of older adults in Oregon and provide an overview of the needs of older adults.
Kathryn Gerhards, Easterseals Oregon senior community service employment program director, will talk about the organization and the support they provide to help prepare older adults to join or re-join the workforce.
James Swalley, Hudson Group general manager at PDX, will share personal reflections on successes he’s had hiring older adults to join his team.
Missed the last virtual awards ceremony? View the event recording or read about past winners on the PDX People website. You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

What's New with PDX Next: Coming 2024, Roof Impacts, Bag Carousel Closures and Crane Picks
Coming 2024: A video love letter to PDX by Dawn Jones Redstone. Together we’ve built something we hope you’ll be proud of – a true testament to the spirit and people of the Pacific Northwest. We hope this video helps you and our community feel proud of how PDX’s new mass timber roof celebrates the best of the Pacific Northwest.
Roof Impacts: The next roof cassettes start moving on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and you can expect impacts on Oct. 19 through 21. From midnight to 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, the roof move will affect bag road and the ticket lobby, moving American and Southwest ticket counters to alternate locations. The same impacts will occur on Thursday and Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
As a reminder, watch the employee digital signage in the bypasses for up-to-date information. We’re running a daily slide noting any changes to baggage handling areas including bag road, OSCAR road and the baggage handling system.
Bag Carousel Closures: Expect bag carousel closures from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. – carousel 6 will be closed Oct. 18 and 19, and carousel 7 will be closed Oct. 20 and 24.
Crane Picks: On Tuesday, Oct. 25, and Thursday, Oct.27, expect crane picks that will impact the ticket lobby and baggage claim. We’ll share more details next week.

At Jackson Shine, Great-Looking Shoes are for Everyone
If you visit Concourse C on a regular basis, you've probably seen Lowell Jackson Sr. – and likely talked to him, too. For the past eight years, the owner of Jackson Shine Co. has been shining shoes and chatting up people at his stand near Gate C5. So many visitors and airport employees stop by to say hello that Lowell's youngest son, Honor, calls him the "unofficial mayor of the airport." But Jackson Shine Co. isn't just a one-man operation – it's a family business. Honor has worked alongside Lowell or behind the scenes since 2017. When Jackson Shine Co. opened a second stand in Concourse E in June 2022, Lowell's older son, Chris, joined the business, too. Read on for a few things to know about Jackson Shine Co. and how it’s growing.

Shaping More Inclusive Airports Through Collaboration
Building shared prosperity for the region through travel, trade and economic development is critical to the future of the Port of Portland and PDX. The Port is dedicated to using the organization's resources, expertise and influence to reduce barriers and create opportunities for communities of color, low-income workers and people with disabilities.
