Spring Graduation

Don't forget to support your graduating students by attending spring graduation on May 3 and 4. Please also join us - whether you attend the ceremony or not - for the reception for undergraduates immediately after the ceremony on Saturday.
Graduate Ceremony: May 3, 2019
7:00 p.m. in the Bank of Colorado Arena at Butler Hancock Athletic Center.

Undergraduate Ceremony: May 4, 2019
10:00 a.m. at Nottingham Field.
The HSS Undergraduate Commencement Reception will follow the undergraduate ceremony and be held on the Candelaria East Plaza (or just inside the Candelaria southeast entrance for inclement weather). Please join us to congratulate students and meet their guests.

Faculty Kudos

Several HSS faculty members received a 2019 Research, Dissemination and Faculty Development (RDFD) grant: Karen Barton (Geography, GIS, and Sustainability), Richard Bownas (Political Science and International Affairs), Brian Iannacchione (Criminology and Criminal Justice), Britney Kyle (Anthropology), Jiacheng Liu (History), Victoria Terranova (Criminology and Criminal Justice), Kyle Ward (Criminology and Criminal Justice), and Robert Weis (History).

Student Kudos

Congratulations to all of the HSS students recognized at the 2019 HSS Honors Convocation. View the event program for the full list of student honorees.
Jacqueline Pasillas (Elementary Education and CLD endorsement), Jorge Rubio (Philosophy), and Gabrielle Stanton (Geography) were each selected for a 2019 Bob & Bonnie Phelps Family CAP Award. They will be recognized at the Community Engaged Scholars Symposium on October 29, 2019.
Stormi Schroder (Geography and Anthropology) was selected to participate in this summer’s Sustainable RIVER REU program at the University of South Dakota on the project, "Ethnohistorical Relationships among American Indian Tribes and the Missouri River" with USD's Dr. David Posthumus.
Ben Shumate (Journalism and Media Studies) was recently awarded a Denver Press Club Damon Runyon Award. Read the full announcement.

This seminar is presented by Gender Studies Coordinator Chris Talbot. Learn about Sonia Johnson's transition to radical feminism and her three-year confrontation with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the late 1970s.

History faculty member recognized for mentorship

Mary Borg (History) was awarded the 2019 Mentor of the Year Award by the Center for Women's and Gender Equity at their 25th Anniversary and Annual Recognition Reception. The CWGE Outstanding Mentor Award goes to an individual who goes above and beyond as a mentor and not only contribute to the success of students with whom they work, but foster an environment in which women have an opportunity to use their voices and see their potential at UNC and beyond. Congratulations Mary!
