Trees felled in the recent ice storm became woodchips for mulching the native plant area!

Weed Wrangle® 2026 was a success! With the help of parishioners, neighbors, and community volunteers, we cleared invasive species south of the parking lot: mainly bush honeysuckle and winter creeper. Not sure what an invasive species is or why it matters? Here’s an info overview by Roger McCoy, parishioner and botanist, and here’s a pictorial guide to some invasives on our campus. Dead trees and fallen limbs were repurposed into a border around the area, and a sizable portion of the area was covered in cardboard, mulch (from the trees recently downed in the Jan ice storm!), and plastic sheeting, to solarize for a few months. A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and worked so hard! (read about Weed Wrangle 2025 here.)

| “Smart Yard” Certification |
“Tennessee Smart Yards” is a program that guides Tennesseans on practices they can apply in their outdoor spaces to create healthier, more ecologically-sound landscapes and communities. You don’t have to be an expert gardener or landscaper to create a Tennessee Smart Yard. All it takes is a willingness to learn and a desire to take actions for the path to certification, including prioritizing native plants. If you’re already certified or want to work toward it, let the CC ministry know!

Our partner organization Cumberland River Compact encourages Davidson residents to not mow their yards till the beginning of May. Why? To improve water absorption in your neighborhood, reduce pollution, cut carbon emissions, and create habitat for wildlife while replenishing our groundwater supply, helping to keep streams alive during drought periods. Register by March 27 to receive a yard sign so everyone knows your choice is intentional. If you sign up, let the CC ministry know!

SCRIPTURE
"Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ Now there was a great deal of grass in the place, so they sat down, about five thousand in all.” (John 6:10, NRSV) – The biblical precedent for no-mow April :)
PRAYER
Gardener of souls, you planted a garden in the beginning and walked among its trees. As I dig and prune, weed and water, remind me that you are tending to me, shaping me with care. Give me patience with slow growth, perseverance for hard work, and joy in the beauty you bring from the earth. May this labor be an act of worship, joining you in caring for the world. Amen.
