A recent story in NPR's All Things Considered reminded me of the importance of reckoning with the past, even when it is difficult to do so. The piece covers the art film For The Sake of Old Times, which was produced by a diverse group of filmmakers at studio1504 in Birmingham, AL. The film combines a gospel choir's performance of "Auld Lang Syne" with footage from the summer of 2020's racial justice protests. "It's certainly my tendency — and maybe our natural human tendency — to want to rush forward and put this year behind us," explains Tyler Jones, the film's director. "But that may do a disservice, I think, to our memories and those who went before us." I am pausing at the dawn of this new year, the beginning of a new decade, and wrestling, both personally and professionally, with how best to honor the past, cherish learning and growth, and embrace a future that is transforming before our eyes.
