Calling all Volunteers for GVSU Move-In 2018! Join us in Allendale on August 20 as we welcome our newest Lakers to their home away from home. Help students settle into their new living space, and give their parents peace of mind, too. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt at check-in and breakfast and lunch are provided. This event is for adults, requires physical activity, and will go on rain or shine.

In fact, among current undergraduates, more than 3,900 (18 percent) said at the time they applied they had a relative who had graduated from Grand Valley — a sister, brother, cousin, aunt, uncle, parent, and even a grandparent. Alumnus Awarded Fellowships to Study Lymphoma Care in Botswana Michael Dykstra, '15, will travel to Botswana for the year to work on a clinical point of care for lymphoma patients, thanks in part to being awarded several prestigious and competitive fellowships. His research will be funded by a combination of a Fulbright U.S. Student scholar award, a Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship award, and the Kennedy Knox and Sheldon Harvard Graduate School Fellowship.

Finkelstein Hall Called a 'Game Changer' for Students President Thomas J. Haas said Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall is both an example of what deep collaboration can accomplish and a game changer for students studying health sciences. Haas made the remarks during a July 17 dedication ceremony for Finkelstein Hall, celebrating the expansion of Grand Valley's Health Campus in downtown Grand Rapids.

University Accreditation Review Grand Valley is seeking comments from the public about the university in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. The university will host a visit on November 5 and 6, 2018, from a team of peer reviewers representing the Higher Learning Commission. Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. All comments must be received by October 4, 2018.

Men's and Women's Tennis Earn ITA Academic Team Honors The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has recognized Grand Valley State men's and women's tennis teams as ITA All-Academic teams, along with eight Lakers that earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the 2017-18 academic year. There were 735 teams across Division I, II, III, NAIA, and JUCO teams that qualified for this honor with an overall team GPA of 3.20 or above and 4,328 student-athletes across the five divisions that received ITA Scholar-Athlete status.

Club Sports Highlight: Students Compete in International Regatta Before competing on the Henley-on-Thames in England, the Grand Valley rowing team traveled south to Greece in June, where they trained in Kastoria and spent time exploring the country. About 25 student-athletes and four coaches participated in the three-week trip overseas.

Lakers Hit it Out of the Ballpark at Tigers Game! For the second year in a row, Lakers showed up in full force at GVSU Night at Comerica Park. On July 31, more than 1,500 Lakers watched the Tigers beat Cincinnati. The Tigers organization donated $5 from each ticket purchased to the Grand Valley Scholarship Fund.
