"The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness."

- Pope Benedict XVI

"The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being."

-St. Pope John Paul II

Greatness is Calling
-Cathedral High School

Wow, that is some company I put our school in. Indeed, these words call us to be great, but not in the eyes of the world, although in some ways, perhaps. I believe that the greatness referred to here is that we are all made in the image and likeness of God, and we are called to be great in our love for God, to be saints. There are times when greatness in the world and greatness in God can overlap or coincide, but more often than not, the measure of greatness in the world is very different from the greatness referred to here.

This year at Cathedral, we created opportunities every day when they overlapped. Doing great things as a student at Cathedral meant showing love and care for others and performing to the best of one's ability in academics, the arts, athletics, and other areas of interest. Being great here also meant that we, as a school, continuously strive to find new ways to engage our students and share the goodness of our faith with others. We had two new and unique ways of doing that during the 2023-24 school year.

On December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we held our first Christmas on the Hill for 300 students from the Enlace Academy. Dayton Flyers fans may recognize this as a sacred tradition held each year at the University of Dayton, and yes, we borrowed the idea from them, thanks in large part to our many Dayton grads on staff. The premise of this event was to share our campus for one day and to provide a carnival/Christmas experience with students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to receive this outpouring of love and activities. What happened that day was magical for both our students and those from Enlace. In the words of a former Enlace administrator, "The impact on the Enlace students was phenomenal, and the Cathedral students were transformed as well." Greatness was so evident in all aspects of this new tradition.

Fast forward to Holy Thursday. Our Campus Ministry, Liturgy, and Theatre teams put their collective heads together to create another tremendous faith opportunity for our students. We held live Stations of the Cross, with our Theatre students acting out the parts of the Stations that Jesus walked over 2,000 years ago. The best part was that our students gathered in our courtyard and got to see and experience the Stations up close, narrated so well by our own Fr. Geoffrey Mooney. Our choir students set the musical backdrop for this heartfelt event. The students were enraptured, with a palpable silence. Once again, our educators and students rose to the occasion to perform and witness this event. Greatness applies here, to be sure.

We also witnessed greatness a few weeks ago when nearly 300 young people received their Cathedral High School diplomas. Below is the Class of 2024 "by the numbers." You will undoubtedly be impressed with just some of what this phenomenal class accomplished during their four years on the Hill.

As we turn the school calendar to the 2024-25 school year, we promise this: We will continue to seek not comfort but greatness and model and provide opportunities to show God's love to one another, both within our Cathedral family and out to the greater community. Yes, Greatness is Calling, and we will continue to do so by the grace of God.

May God continue to bless our school, and may we humbly say, Go Irish!

Grotto
Groundbreaking

Cathedral High School was blessed to break ground on our grotto on Monday, May 13. Thanks to the generosity of Ryan Hasbrook '92 (back row, far left), the Cathedral family will have a beautiful place to pray and reflect.

The grotto will be located on the west side of the practice football/lacrosse field. Construction has begun and should be completed early this fall. Many members of the Hasbrook family were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. It was a beautiful afternoon in so many ways.
