Thoughts on GA Evaluations

By this time next week, I will have my mid-year GA evaluation in hand. I can't wait to see and discuss how I have grown. After all, October feels like years ago and I have learned so much since then, both in my ELP courses and in my role as a GA in Student Development & Inclusion.
While I can admit evaluations do give me a bit of anxiety, especially being an Enneagram Type 1 (Strict Perfectionist), I do remember an overwhelming feeling of motivation after receiving feedback from my supervisor, Dr. Hubain. Looking at the various categories grounded in the NASPA/ACPA competencies, I knew exactly where and how I could improve and I used these areas as a roadmap to guide my personal and professional development. I am excited to revisit that map to chart my progress and I look forward to the jump start this evaluation will give me as I set out new goals as a higher education scholar-practitioner.
Being able to acknowledge my personal growth and set goals for myself isn't the only benefit of the evaluations however. These evaluations also have a broader impact on the ELP curriculum. It's exciting to think about how we, as GAs and as students, get to shape the program to ensure that it is responsive to our needs as we prepare to be student affairs professionals. With all this in mind, I hope you take the time to reflect on and discuss your growth, your needs, your questions, and your goals when you receive your evaluations later this week!

Supporting Basic Needs

How does your work support the needs of students? How do you make sure your own needs are met? During a global pandemic, when health and financial concerns are ever rising, it's important to keep the basic needs of ourselves and each individual we work with at the forefront of our minds. Luckily, the Basic Needs Collective (BNC) is here to make this even easier to do with their resources, website, virtual office, resource request form, and Instagram account.
Many of the offices that you currently work within may be formal or informal partners to the BNC and you likely provide needed support to students in a specific context. The beauty of the BNC however is that it operates as a one-stop shop for students to find out where to go for the things that they need.
If you, or a student you are working with, is struggling please refer them to the BNC's virtual office hours, which take place via ConexEd 10am-2pm Monday-Friday. If students are in need of support beyond these hours, they can also get in touch with a BNC representative through the Contact Now form on the BNC website.
Follow @uofu_bnc for more BNC resources and updates.
See something missing on the BNC website? Contact olivia.griffin@utah.edu to suggest resources that you feel should be included to support the basic needs of students!
