August's New Release Pages feature another collection of both brand new and historic jazz arrangements, led by our newest Jazz Lines Publications releases.

We have a brand new Ella Fitzgerald arrangement that we are particularly pleased to present: her definitive version of I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm. This 1937 standard was included in Ella's 1958 Irving Berlin Song Book album with arrangements by Paul Weston. While not strictly a Christmas-related song, it has nevertheless become a staple for performances during the holiday time of year. This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used during the 1958 recording session - this is not a transcription.

Also hot off the presses is Stardust from Nat 'King' Cole as arranged by Gordon Jenkins. Nat Cole recorded this Jenkins arrangement in Los Angeles in 1956 for the Love Is the Thing album. This recording is perhaps the definitive performance of this standard. This publication was prepared using the original score and the set of parts used during the 1956 recording session.

We also just published Sky Dive from Freddie Hubbard. Few arrangers have been able to bridge the gap between the artistic and the accessible better than Don Sebesky. His arrangements for all-time great trumpeter Hubbard stand out as particularly outstanding. Sky Dive, the title track of a Hubbard album from 1973, is a wonderful mood-setter for your star trumpet soloist. This publication was prepared using Sebesky's original pencil score.

Les Baxter was a ground-breaking composer, conductor, and producer and we have finally published our first arrangement of his, Coco. Baxter was a force in music, having helped to usher in exotica in 1947 with his Music Out of the Moon release (themes by Harry Revel). This arrangement of Coco is from Baxter's 1959 album Jungle Jazz and was written to feature tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson. This publication was prepared using the original set of parts from the 1959 recording session.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: July highlights included two new releases from Alfred Publishing's 2023 New Issues. Gordon Goodwin and Alan Baylock are two of the most popular arrangers working today. From Gordon we have the new original El Alma de La Banda (The Soul of the Band), an energetic, soulful Latin tune graded as medium, with flexibility for soloists. From Alan, we have Mamacita, another medium level chart, with a straight-eighth feel on the Joe Henderson standard.

Brand New Little Big Band Nonet Charts

We are very proud to have built a close relationship with a true Renaissance man of jazz like Chuck Israels. Perhaps best known for his time in the Bill Evans Trio from 1961 to 1966, Chuck has been active as a performer, arranger, bandleader, and educator for over 60 years. His credits also include playing with Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, and many more.

As founder and director of the National Jazz Ensemble (1973-1981), Israels created a repertory orchestra that brought a fresh approach to jazz classics. He has written hundreds of arrangements. The influence of his years with Bill Evans is evident. Actually, Israels says he became interested in writing while working with Evans: "Behind all the spontaneity and responsiveness to the moment that was part and parcel of that music, was a deep-seated organization of musical elements that Bill worked hard to prepare and keep in control...As I realized increasingly how this balance of elements worked, I thought I might, over time, be able to learn to do something like that myself as a writer."
