Dear Pilot parents and families,

Like many of you, I have been working remotely since March, and technology fatigue is ever present. That is why I was delighted to participate in the Pilots Fun Run a few weeks back. I could have spent my Saturday staring at another screen and catching up on emails, but instead I laced up my walking shoes and headed outside for a socially-distanced hike with a few friends. Over that weekend, photos and stories started to pour in from all over the world from Pilots past, present, and future, sharing their joy of being active outside in their purple gear. Pilots participated in over 140 cities and locations, surpassing our mileage goal for a grand total of 1972 miles. It was truly a weekend of unity, and one that reminded me of our amazing community that is connected no matter where we are. If you missed the Pilots Fun Run, please enjoy these highlights!

Seniors can register for Spring 2021 classes beginning on November 9, with other class years to follow through November 19.

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT THE INTERNSHIP SEARCH

Particularly during the uncertainty of COVID-19, many students are feeling nervous about the internship search process. We want to assure students that it still is possible to find or create a quality internship experience — even if it is virtual! Whether your student is looking to complete an internship independently or to earn academic credit, Audrey Fancher, Internship and Engagement Coordinator in UP’s Career Center, provides five tips for parents to help their student along the journey.

Last month we discussed how students’ stress levels rise at the semester half-way point and shared insights for helping your student prepare for midterms. Since our last newsletter, students may have received academic warnings and mid-term grades from professors. As mentioned, now is a good time talk to your student about their academic progress. When doing so, these factors may be helpful to keep in mind.

SUPPORT IMMEDIATE STUDENT NEEDS

98% of students at UP receive financial aid in a normal year. This year the need is even greater, as many students and their families have suffered financial setbacks and hardship due to the impacts of COVID-19. But the UP community remains committed to helping our incredible students hold onto their dreams of a UP education. Learn more about how you can support the immediate needs of students or how your student can benefit from the generosity of others if they are experiencing need at this time.

STUDIES ABROAD APPLICATION

The application deadline for the 2021—2022 UP Studies Abroad programs is November 1. If your student is interested, please encourage them to apply! The current application cycle is for Summer 2021, Fall 2021, Academic-year 2021-2022, and Spring 2022. Learn more about UP Studies Abroad or encourage your student to meet with a staff member virtually to ask questions.

Although we can’t gather in person with you right now, we encourage our families to take advantage of these special opportunities:
- Awaken the Stars: Hear directly from UP professors about what they really teach.
- Month of Remembrance: Be part of a longtime tradition by sharing the names of your beloved departed, whom UP will remember in its Masses and prayers throughout November.

Check out the Spring 2021 academic update from Provost Herbert Medina and information regarding housing applications for Spring 2021. The Office of Residence Life will determine how much on-campus housing is available after processing everyone’s applications. They are working hard to accommodate as many interested students as possible, and they will maintain a housing wait list. All students will be updated on the status of their application by November 5, 2020.
