While the Texas State Railroad dates to the late 1800s, the Texas State Railroad State Historical Park with tourist train rides officially opened July 4, 1976. Originally built to haul wood and iron for a prison foundry in East Texas, the railway went through periods of expansion and deficits. At one point, it was going to be turned into a hike and bike trail before the idea for tourist train service took hold. Victorian-inspired depots were constructed in Palestine and Rusk, and opening day saw two steam locomotives pull passenger trains through the Piney Woods. The 50th anniversary celebration will have steam train excursions, family-friendly games and activities, concessions, a cornhole tournament, and live music in the evening.

Founded by a local boat captain association, this is the oldest fishing tournament on the Texas coast. Deep Sea Roundup has been held almost every year since its founding as the Tarpon Rodeo in 1932. Anglers from across the state come to participate in six divisions, including bay, surf, fly-fishing, and catch-and-release billfish and tarpon. Marking its 90th iteration this year, the tournament also includes a variety of festivities. Participants can enjoy a shrimp boil, dinner and cocktails, a silent auction, and the Let’s Get Yachty party and concert. The final day features a fish fry and awards ceremony. Spectators are welcome to watch the weigh-ins at Roberts Point Park.

For 70 years, this rodeo has been a mainstay summer event in Fannin County. Crowds come out to see bull riding, barrel racing, mutton bustin’, and other rodeo feats, as well as enjoy live music, noncompetitive rodeo performances, and kids activities. Lester Haynes Kueckelhan hosted the first rodeo, a small friendly competition, on his family’s ranch in 1955. Since that first event, the family-owned rodeo has grown to be officially sanctioned by rodeo associations and feature competitors from around the country. Spectators can expect a traditional western event with top-notch talent and fun for the whole family.
