Dear Friend of ILI,
For readers of a certain age and musical inclination, the news from ILI these days might recall a song by a mildly famous band from Liverpool, England. Among the songs on the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour album, alongside “Penny Lane” and “Fool on the Hill,” is the exuberant pop anthem, “Hello, Goodbye,” a title that captures well recent comings and goings in the Inspired Leadership Initiative.

We prepare to say hello to incoming members of Cohort 7, a diverse and fascinating group. The fellows-to-be come to ILI from the worlds of law, finance, health care, education, international development, human rights advocacy, and the military. We eagerly await their arrival at Notre Dame and the start of their ILI journey next month. Please join me in welcoming these newest members of the ILI family – who will be formally introduced in our next INSIGHTs newsletter.
We say goodbye to three beloved members of the ILI team. As you likely know, Tom Schreier and Chris Stevens, the visionary founders of ILI, have transitioned out of their leadership roles after long service. Fortunately for the program, both have promised to continue supporting ILI in other ways. To express fully all that Tom and Chris have meant to ILI would take the entirety of this newsletter and many volumes of newsletters following. Thank you, Tom and Chris, for your wisdom, generosity, and devotion to making ILI the thriving program it has become. ILI is forever in your debt, as am I. We say goodbye, as well, to Program Associate Joe Drey, whose knowledge, energy, and ever-ready smile made ILI a smarter, brighter, happier place for designing the next act. Thank you, Joe. Good luck in your next act!
Along with announcements of comings and goings, you will find in this newsletter thoughtful and well written reflections by ILI alums Paparao Chintalapudi and Connie Chartrand. Paparao writes of the magical alchemy of ILI and where it has led him since his return to India. Connie explores her layered feelings as she arrives home on a rainy morning after the long drive from South Bend to Vermont. Both pieces invite reflection on the past, present, and future following a year of the ILI experience. For readers contemplating an application to ILI, you will find information, links, schedules, and more. You’ll also find a number to call if you want to talk it over with a member of our team.
In closing, I wish you a happy summer! I hope to see you here on campus sometime this coming academic year, where I’ll offer a warm “Hello,” by which I’ll mean “Welcome back to Notre Dame!” And when you’re ready to depart, I’ll wish you an equally warm, “Goodbye,” by which I’ll mean, “We at ILI look forward to your return.”
Until then, Hela, heba helloa!
John

Alumni Reflection | Paparao Chintalapudi (Cohort 5) |

| In alchemy, the outcome defines the process. That’s how I now view my journey through the Inspired Leadership Initiative at the University of Notre Dame.
Let me begin with the outcome — what unfolded in the year following ILI.
|
|
|
I found myself working more than 50 hours a week, immersed in reflection, contemplation, writing, and focused creation. I developed three leadership programs that I now offer through executive education. I wrote ten original cases to teach leadership and strategy. I joined as Adjunct Faculty at one of India’s premier government-owned institutions for executive education. And most significantly, I published my first book, The Ignored Mirror — now available on Amazon, Kindle, and Goodreads. Underlying all this was a single focus: to share knowledge and experience with society at large. Read more...

Alumni Reflection | Connie Chartrand (Cohort 6) |

I arrived home in the early morning hours having spent this past year as a member of Notre Dame’s Inspired Leadership Initiative, Cohort 6. It was dark and raining. I was tired after travelling 15 hours by car from South Bend to Vermont. As we drove into the driveway that I thought I knew so well, it felt unfamiliar. My feelings were layered—it felt good to be home and yet home felt different.

My year at Notre Dame was filled with the beauty of the campus, the discussions with colleagues and faculty, the spirituality of The Holy Cross Priests, the friendship of students, the humble feeling of praying at the Grotto, and the splendor of seeing the Dome each day. And yes, the daily visits with the Baristas at Cafe J and the warm welcomes by Jennifer and Emily at Raclin Museum's Front Desk. Read more...
