Lawyers Really Matter
It's a big day today in the United States, and you don't have to look far in news coverage to see lawyers playing key roles.  While we wait for the election to play out, diving deeper into your interest in law school is a good use of your energy.
If you're interested in law and law school, you are not alone.  There has been a dramatic rise in law school applications so far this season -- with a particular increase in the volume of applicants with strong academic credentials (high GPAs and/or LSAT scores).  And many people -- including lots of well-prepared Jumbos -- have not yet submitted their applications.

Some law schools are considering increasing class sizes a bit, while others are predicting their decisions will come more slowly as their staff carefully consider an unprecedented volume of applications.

Law school opens doors -- and debt can close doors.  If you're considering law school, it's worth your time to think about how to pay for it.  There are loans available for US Citizens and eligible non-citizens -- but with loans comes the responsibility of paying them back, which is a burden that many young lawyers are anxious about, according to this new ABA report.  And, many law schools offer 'merit' scholarships for people whose academic credentials exceed most of their student body.  Make it part of your law school research to consider and understand both.  Tufts will be here to support you along the way.
There are still a lot of events happening to help highlight the work you can do as a lawyer and prepare you for the application process-- some right here by the Tufts community, and many more nationally.
Finally, as you keep your eyes on your own goals and values, please look after yourself and your fellow Jumbos.  There are many ways to work for justice, and the world needs your talents.

Tufts Lawyers Association: Navigating Change

Monday, November 19, 5:00 - 6:00 Eastern Time
One of the best things you can do if you are considering law school is this: talk to lawyers!  And even more importantly: Listen to lawyers!  Luckily for you, the Tufts Lawyers Association is an active alumni group who are happy to help students.  Look for more activity and information about this group in the spring semester.
The next opportunity for you to connect with the Tufts Lawyers Association is at this upcoming virtual event, which will be a fascinating conversation among practicing lawyers. Please join fellow Tufts lawyers Amii Barnard-Bahn, J89, and Ken Priore, A91, as they discuss how change can impact career journey, leadership, prioritization and decision making and how to shift mindset to manage change more effectively.  Amii and Ken will engage in a 30 minute fireside chat on their own observations and experience with managing change throughout their legal careers.  This will be followed by Q&A session and an opportunity for members of the Tufts community to share their own experiences. This event is geared towards Tufts lawyers/law students but is open to all students, alumni, parents and friends.
