This program is a partnership between the city of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability and the Institute for Sustainable Solutions to advance the work of the Portland Climate Action Plan. 
Preferred student level and/or major: open to all majors, undergrad and grad students
Duration of internship: Winter/Spring term 2018
Desired start date: January 8, 2018
Time Commitment per week/per term: 12 hours per week; 11 weeks per term for a total of 132 hours per term.
Application Deadline: Review of applications will begin immediately.  Open until finalists are selected.  For best consideration, submit your application no later than Monday, December 11th, 2017.
Application Instructions: This position requires current enrollment as a PSU student and enrollment for the duration of the internship.  To confirm that you are formally admitted and enrolled, please email your full name and student ID to internships@pdx.edu.  Include the name of the internship you are applying for in the subject line.  Once your status is confirmed, you will receive the full application instructions via email. 

Black Bag Speaker Series

On November 9, the Black Bag Speaker Series featured Cedric Essi, who spoke on "Coming Out as Family: Queer Interracial Kinship and the Closet(s) of Multiracialism. 
Cedric Essi is a Lecturer for American Studies at the University of Bremen in Germany and is currently at UC Berkley as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the African American Studies Department.

Essay Guidelines
  •  Essays should focus on any aspects of the Africana experience, i.e. art, education, history, literature, politics, psychology, social issues, and policy issues.
  • The essay must be:
  • Typed in Microsoft Word software
  • 12-18 pages in length
  • Double-spaced with one inch margins-left to right and –top to bottom.
  • Students are asked to document sources with either MLA or the APA style guide.
  • Contains NO identifying information

Ankh Maat Wedjau Honor Society

The "Ankh Maat Wedjau" Honor Society is a non-secret, non-profit organization which promotes scholarly study, research, publication and other scholarly activity in the field of Africana Studies among students at academic institutions, and among academic professionals in the field of Africana studies.

Gentrification of the Mind


​In honor of World AIDS Day, the following programs consider the political past, present, and future of art, AIDS, social justice, and queer life, anchoring a three-day series of related events at PICA and PNCA, including a program of newly commissioned films by Visual AIDS (December 1) and a second reading and discussionevent with Sarah Schulman on her new book, Conflict is Not Abuse (December 3).

2:00 PM Reading and Talk: Distinguished writer Sarah Schulman (NYC) discusses her thought-provoking book, Gentrification of the Mind (2012), including a facilitated, post-reading discussion and Q&A with d.a. carter, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in gender, sexuality, and Black cultural studies at Portland State University.

3:00 PM Panel: Lisa Bates (Professor of Urban Studies & Planning, Portland State University); Sharita Towne (artist and educator) and manuel arturo abreu (artist and writer) will discuss Schulman’s Gentrification of the Mind and its relevance to the intersection of social justice, housing policy, and queer, POC, and artist communities in present-day Portland.

4:30 PM Screening: A screening of the documentary UNITED IN ANGER: A History of Act Up, followed by a Q&A with the film’s co-producer, Sarah Schulman, moderated by Stephanie Snyder, the Anne and John Hauberg Director & Curator, Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, and curator of the Cooley’s upcoming retrospective on Gregg Bordowitz.

As 2017 comes to a close, the Department of Black Studies thanks each and every one of the students, community members, and faculty and staff at Portland State who have supported us this year. We look forward to bringing you more Black Bag Speaker Events, special events, and an array of thought-provoking course offerings. 
This has been a tumultuous year with a number of events occurring nationally and around the globe that have brought an ever increasing awareness that there is much work that still needs to be done. We will continue to do our part and hope that you will do yours.
