FAQ of the Month
I know I need to say "no" more often, but I'm struggling to do so. Have any tips?
It can be difficult to decline requests that don't mesh with your interests/availability. There's a tension between wanting to help and recognizing there's only so much you can do in a given workday/week/month. As you evaluate the demands on your time, ask yourself these questions:
  • Will your other work, personal obligations, etc. suffer if you say yes?
  • Do you understand exactly what's involved with the task?
  • Is there someone else who should be doing the job or who is better suited to it?
  • Will this positively contribute to your career competencies or personal network?
Depending on your answers, you may need to reflect before you dive into something new.
