Do you remember the first word you learned that surprised and delighted you? Today’s word of the day is ganbaru (頑張る), Japanese for “to persevere, to never give up, to fight for what you desire in life.” See below for links to share your own favorite word in any language(s) and to see what others have sent in. Thanks to Vincent for introducing us to ganbaru!

Red card update: thanks to those who sent us translations into Italian and Brazilian Portuguese! We will send those to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, since no other languages were submitted. We suggest that you encourage friends and colleagues who may speak and write languages not currently posted on the Red Cards site to contact the ILRC directly via their Facebook page or phone – (415) 255-9499. About 19 languages are there so far.
From the ILRC Red Cards page: “All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The ILRC’s Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home.”
