HOW DOES Global Education WORK AT TUFTS?
AUGUST 4, 2021
Students in Beijing
Welcome Jumbos,
Thinking about study abroad during your time at Tufts? This week, we're providing a preview of all the offerings through Tufts Global Education.
Education abroad is an academically- and personally-enriching experience for students in all majors! Tufts Global Education can help you make your study-abroad plans a reality. Students have various options for studying abroad, from semester- or year-long programs based at partner universities around the world to short-term global programs in a variety of settings. Most students choose semester- or year-long study abroad during their junior year, but you may also consider going earlier if that better suits your academic needs. Summer and/or other short-term options abroad can usually take place at any time during your Tufts career. No matter when you decide to go, planning early is crucial and will leave more options available to you as you will more easily be able to incorporate it into your academic plan.

How Do I Study Abroad?

  • Attend a faculty panel on international education and designing your global experiences on Monday, August 16, at 9 a.m. EDT (Zoom passcode: 722331)
  • Learn more about Tufts Global Education's offerings at our upcoming Orientation session on Wednesday, August 18, at 2 p.m. EDT (Zoom passcode: 291889)
  • Watch or attend a “Study Abroad First Steps” session to get yourself acquainted with our policies, options, and timelines.
  • Discuss your interest in study abroad with your academic or major advisor to plot out when you should take your various degree and major requirements; we recommend saving a few of the more flexible requirements (e.g., distribution credits) for your time abroad.
  • By November 1 of the academic year prior to semester- or year-long study abroad, all students must register their interest/intention to study abroad via the "Intent to Study Abroad" form. (Registration for the 2022–23 academic year will go live on our website in September 2021.) This is a mandatory step in order to study abroad; students who do not register their intent by the deadline will not be eligible to study abroad. That said, registration of intent is non-binding, so you may later choose not to study abroad. (Students who indicate their intention to study abroad will not receive an on-campus housing lottery number for that academic year and may choose to be placed on a waitlist for on-campus housing. Questions about the waitlist and housing application process should be directed to Residential Life.)
  • Research program options and attend program information sessions to discover which program(s) best suit your needs.
  • Meet with our staff, either virtually or in-person (when available), in Tufts Global Education on the 7th floor of Dowling Hall to discuss the programs you’ve researched and how to apply.
  • No later than February 1 of the academic year prior to semester- or year-long study abroad, students must submit their application(s) to either Tufts Programs Abroad or approved external options (details below).

Summer or Winter Global Programs

Students may wish to participate in short-term global courses either in place of, or in addition to, a semester- or year-long study-abroad experience. Available options arranged by Tufts vary each year with regard to location and enable students to take part in global experiences with a specific academic focus, complemented by enriching cultural activities.
