Assistant Professor Sarah Cavanah led two sessions for American Public Media’s first Civic Learning Professional Development Summit June 5 in Gladstone. Both sessions involved testing and feedback for an experiential learning game she has developed along with Assistant Professor Tamar Wilner and Ashley Muddiman in Communication Studies hypothesized to hold steady or lower levels of cynicism during media literacy interventions by introducing students to concepts in media sociology and media economics. The first session continued to gather data on the game from high school students and recent graduates. The second session introduced the game to K-12 teachers from around western Missouri and Eastern Kansas, including its pedagogical foundations. Eleven of the K-12 educators signed up to potentially have the full media literacy intervention tested in their schools, grant funding permitting.
