Dear Cathedral Family,

Last weekend, I visited my eldest son in my hometown of Detroit. We attended the final day of the NFL draft and also went to a game of my beloved Detroit Tigers, who actually won!! On Sunday, we attended Holy Mass at his beautiful new parish, the National Shrine of the Little Flower, in Royal Oak, Michigan. The priest began his homily with a story, which I will sum up here:  a mother was having a terrible morning. Her two small children were slow to get moving and uncooperative, and they missed the bus. So, mom had to get them in the car and drive them to school. Mom was still so upset that she was giving her children "the silent treatment" and clutching the wheel as she drove. The little boy broke the silence by saying, "Mom, why don't you take a deep breath? It always helps." The little girl then said, "Mom, why don't you play some music? That always helps." Mom stayed silent, but after dropping them off at school, she relaxed as she realized that her young children were teaching her, using her common suggestions to calm situations down.

I believe all of us can relate to that story in one way or another. As we move through the busy days of May, let us follow the advice of the small children in the story: take a deep breath, listen to some good music, and enjoy these special days.

One way to stay connected to goodness during May or anytime is to model Jesus, the Good Shepherd. His instructions to love one another are always in vogue, perhaps now more than ever. Jesus called Himself "the vine" and us "the branches." Think of ways to stay connected to the vine as we wrap up the 2023-24 school year and move into summer. Staying connected to "the vine" can be done by breathing deeply, listening well, praying extra often, and genuinely and intentionally showing grace and love for others. We are very intentional here at Cathedral by modeling and showing grace and love for all of those in our community, especially our students, and especially in May. However, this can sometimes be perceived as " tough love." Certainly, hounding our students to finish the year well by completing assignments, wearing the proper school uniforms, and parking in the correct spots are all ways we show love for them, even if it may not seem so. By showing love intentionally and consistently, we are preparing them to enter the big, daunting world filled with good examples of love and a complete toolkit of ways to respond when love is not freely given. The Catholic Holy Cross model of transforming the hearts and minds of our diverse family of students is timeless and one that we are committed to every day.

Again, thank you for your commitment to Cathedral High School as we walk this journey together. The culminating events of May provide us all with myriad opportunities to breathe deeply, listen well, and show grace and mercy to one another. The world needs all of these beautiful things now, and let us be the ones to share these blessings. May God continue to bless our Cathedral community, and may God be praised.

Sr. Br. Andre, pray for us!
Blessed Basil Moreau, pray for us!
Our Lady of the Hill, pray for and protect us!

Humbly in service,
