UTA RESEARCHERS: BETTER PHYSICIAN COMMUNICATION IMPROVES HEALTH OUTCOMES

A trio of University of Texas at Arlington researchers focused on patient-centered communications found that women who felt their health concerns were listened to by their health care providers had more positive outcomes compared to those who did not feel heard.
Tiffany Kindratt and Kyrah Brown, both assistant professors of public health in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, and Grace E. Brannon, assistant professor of communication in the College of Liberal Arts, were coauthors on the study, which was published in the journal PEC Innovation.

Athletic Training Day Attracts Potential Students
|
The yearly Athletic Training (AT) Day at The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) provides potential students with information on earning a Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) and delivers fun.
Hosted on campus in October, potential MSAT students enjoyed a tour, lunch and panels of faculty, students and alumni.

The DFW Hospital Council’s (DFWHC) 75th Annual Awards Luncheon was Friday, October 27 at the Irving Convention Center with the theme of “Inspired Dedication.” The event was attended by several of our CONHI leadership team and faculty members.
The keynote speaker for the event was Jane Pauley, anchor of the award-winning CBS Sunday Morning. Jane Pauley addressed the need for decreasing perspectives of mental health conditions as she spoke about her experience with having medication-controlled bipolar disorder for many years. Her presentation also involved a unique Q&A session moderated by Cynthia Izaguirre, news anchor at WFAA Ch. 8.

Dean Elizabeth Merwin and Dr. Yue Liao participated with panelists: Drs. Andrea Baccarelli, Yang Xie, and Xinlei Wang at the Statistics & Data Sciene Lecture Series last month. The panelists discussed the future of public health, challenges in the public health field in the era of AI, and value of public health education.

In the closing presentation of the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists meeting in Chicago, the inaugural Presidential Award for Distinguished Service to Obstetrics and Gynecology was awarded to CONHI faculty member Dr. Florence Haseltine for her work in founding the Society for Women’s Health Research and its Journal, and, most importantly, for her efforts to promote women’s health research during her 27 years as Director of the Center for population Research at NICHD.

Congratulations to Dr. Maxine Adegbola- Associate Clinical Professor and coordinator of Honors College UG Nursing Program, who has been selected to receive the ABNF Leadership and Public Policy Mentoring Fellowship award for the successful completion of this year-long fellowship as a member of the inaugural cohort, presented 10/21/2023.
The mission of the ABNF Leadership and Public Policy Mentoring Fellowship is to improve the diversity of nursing academia, with a special emphasis on promoting the acquisition of leadership positions within the nursing workforce and promoting nurse Educators’ involvement in public policy and advocacy.

UTA will be one of four new research centers that will pilot innovative solutions to the state’s maternal mortality and morbidity crisis, The Texas Tribune reported. Kyrah Brown, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, said this will create an opportunity for students of all backgrounds to engage in important research.
