We are delighted to be sharing with you this inaugural newsletter of the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University. There has been a lot going on in the department. This newsletter is intended as way for faculty, students, alumni, and friends of Hebrew and Judaic Studies to stay connected.
This Spring we welcome our new colleague, Dr. Lila Corwin Berman, the Paul & Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History and the Director of the Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History.
We have a number of exciting events this Spring that will highlight the research undertaken by department faculty and visiting scholars. Read more below about Dr. Roni Henig's new book on the revival of Hebrew, and join us for the book launch on February 11. We are also hosting our second and third Salo and Jeannette Baron Conferences in Jewish Studies. We are grateful to the Knapp Family Foundation for its ongoing support of these conferences.
This Spring, we launch a new course on antisemitism. The course is primarily virtual and intended as a low-barrier entry for undergraduate students to engage with the critical study of antisemitism and Jewish history. It includes contributions from department faculty who have crafted lessons on antisemitism and related phenomena spanning from antiquity to the modern world.
We look forward to a successful Spring semester.
