Lila Corwin Berman is the Paul & Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History and the Director of the Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History. She received her B.A. from Amherst College and her Ph.D. from Yale. Prior to joining NYU’s faculty, she held the Murray Friedman Chair of American Jewish History at Temple University, where she directed the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History.

Dr. Berman’s research focuses on U.S. political history. A forthcoming book titled Who Belongs? Citizenship Rights and the Question of America's Jews (Princeton University Press) traces how U.S. law imagined and reimagined citizenship through Jews. Most recently, she is author of The American Jewish Philanthropic Complex: The History of a Multibillion-Dollar Institution (2020), awarded the Ellis W. Hawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians and the Saul Viener Book Prize from the American Jewish Historical Society. She is also the author of Metropolitan Jews: Politics, Race, and Religion in Postwar Detroit (2015) and Speaking of Jews: Rabbis, Intellectuals, and the Creation of an American Public Identity (2009). Her work has received support from the National Endowment of the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies, and her first book was a finalist for the Jewish Book Council’s Sami Rohr Prize.

Dr. Berman has published articles in several scholarly journals, including the American Historical Review, Journal of American History, AJS Review, Modern American History, and Jewish Social Studies. She has also written guest columns for the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the Forward, and she gives frequent public talks.
