Sofie Ogren and Sara Blair Find Time to Problem Solve
Sofie Ogren (she/they) with the Port of Portland and Sara Blair (she/her) with ABM were nominated by Logan, a PDX traveler:
"I left my cell phone in a restroom and realized as soon as I came through the exit. I was directed by United Airlines employees to call Lost and Found to see if they could help me. My ID, debit card, credit card and work ID were in the phone case, so losing this was so much more than just losing the phone.
Sofie asked Sara with ABM help to look for my item and stayed on the phone with me when I got lost looking for the Lost and Found office. She had my phone brought to me so I didn't have to make a return trip to the airport once it was turned in. She was kind, so helpful, and patient. She never tried to rush me off the phone.
I worked a similar job at another airport a long time ago and I know that Sofie was probably busy with other calls since she seemed to be working alone, but never tried to rush me or act like my mistake was not important. Good customer service seems hard to find these days and she represented your airport well."

What's New with PDX Next: Concourse B, Stadium Steps, Baggage Claim and January Forum
Concourse B Detour: The work on the north side completed over the weekend and resumes on the south side this week. As a reminder, the impacts are for evening travelers arriving at Concourse B gates, that means a temporary detour week nights from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. [Note: There may be work on Saturdays if there are delays due to weather on weeknights.]
Here’s what you should know:
Shortcut win: Arriving passengers will take a “magic door” (normally an emergency exit) straight to the arrivals curb. It’s quicker than the usual route – consider it a little win in the middle of the changes!
Connecting flights: Connecting passengers will need to head back to the ticket lobby to re-clear security. Those travelers will get an "express pass" to skip to the front of the TSA line.
Meet and greet in a different spot: For people meeting these arriving passengers, they’ll need to meet at the curb or in baggage claim. If you see folks waiting at the steps for their arriving friends or family between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m., feel free to check if their party is coming from Concourse B gates.
Help is always close by: PDX People will be there to guide travelers through the process. And folks like you can stay knowledgeable of these changes so you can help answer questions for any passengers needing extra guidance.
Stadium Steps: Through the end of the month, there will be work on the steps as crews install a walnut inlay to act as a warning strip. Only one set will close at a time, and the escalators and main staircases will not be impacted.
Baggage Claim: Now through the end of the month, expect intermittent increased noise in baggage claim near carousels 3 through 6 as crews prepare the floor for terrazzo installation.
January Forum: Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Jan. 28, to get the inside scoop on Phase 2 of construction at PDX. The Port of Portland's Jen Guild along with Joe Brower of Hoffman-Skanska will share the latest construction updates and answer your questions about PDX Next in just 30 minutes. If you'd like to join this meeting, email PDX People Communications before the end of the day on Monday, Jan. 27, for the meeting link.

Blue Lightning Initiative
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and educating the public about how to identify and prevent this crime.
Last year, we launched an ongoing partnership with the Blue Lightning Initiative – a program led by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation – to help train PDX employees to identify potential traffickers and human trafficking victims, and to report their suspicions to federal law enforcement.
Want a chance to win $50? Watch this 25-minute video on common indicators of trafficking that airport employees may encounter, and how to immediately report suspected trafficking to law enforcement. Once you're done, enter to win a $50 gift card by registering your completion by Friday, Jan. 31. Want to learn more? Attend a webinar on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to help you recognize and report human trafficking.

PDX Community Room
Last week, we shared about the PDX Community Room  a break room for everyone who works at the airport. In exciting news, we just added vending machines to the space. And coming soon – an arcade machine!
As a reminder, you can find the room on lower Concourse D, under Gate D4. There are two routes for accessing the PDX Community Room – from the D5 freight elevator or from the central waste area (red badge required for this route). There is also signage on lower D to point the way. Learn more about the space and its conduct guidelines.

Alaska Airlines Announces Three New Nonstops Around Oregon
In great news, Alaska is adding two PDX nonstops to its 2025 schedule to better connect travelers to destinations across the state and country. On May 15, they'll start a new daily, nonstop flight between Portland and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and also resume twice-daily nonstop service between Portland and Eugene. And a bonus for Southern Oregon: they're adding a new route between Medford and San Diego. All three will fly year-round. "As passenger traffic at PDX continues to grow, so does the opportunity for airlines," Port of Portland's Chief Aviation Officer Dan Pippenger said. "We appreciate the continued partnership with Alaska that gives travelers more options to connect to major markets and more flights within our state."
