Notre Dame, IBM launch Tech Ethics Lab to tackle the ethical implications of technology

In partnership with IBM, Notre Dame has launched a collaboration that will address the myriad ethical concerns raised by the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing, to address society’s most pressing problems. Funded by a 10-year, $20 million IBM commitment, the new Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Lab will conduct applied research and promote models for the ethical application of technology within the tech sector, business, and government.

Former South Bend mayor and presidential candidate joins ND Institute for Advanced Study

Pete Buttigieg, former South Bend mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has been named a 2020-2021 faculty fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. He will work on two research projects — one that explores how to restore trust in political institutions and another that considers the forces distinctively shaping the 2020s. He will also teach a one-credit interdisciplinary course, Perspectives on Trust, based in the Department of English. Undergraduates interested in enrolling in the course must apply here by July 23.

Historian wins book prize for her work on Parisian market women in the French Revolution

Katie Jarvis, an associate professor in the Department of History, has been awarded the Louis A. Gottschalk Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies for her work, Politics in the Marketplace: Work, Gender, and Citizenship in Revolutionary France. The book is the first study of the Parisian market women — the Dames des Halles — during the French Revolution and explores how the Dames’ political activism and economic activities shaped the nature of nascent democracy and capitalism through daily commerce.

Eye of the hurricane: Notre Dame’s new provost understands crisis leadership

Marie Lynn Miranda, now the Charles and Jill Fischer Provost at Notre Dame and successor to Thomas Burish, is no stranger to leading a university through a crisis. The former provost of Rice University and a distinguished scholar in the field of children’s environmental health organized the school's disaster response in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. “Throughout our lives, we are confronted with situations where we don’t quite know what to do,” she said. “We don’t know what the best thing is and we don’t necessarily have all the expertise we might ideally have. We must bring data and analysis and the best technical advice there is. But when in doubt, responding with love is always a good choice.”

Chavez named a Mellon Emerging Faculty Leader by Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation

Notre Dame anthropologist Alex Chávez has been named one of 10 Mellon Emerging Faculty Leaders at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The award supports junior faculty whose research focuses on contemporary American history, politics, culture, and society, and who are committed to the creation of an inclusive campus community for underrepresented students and scholars. He also also recently won a National Endowment for the Humanities long-term residential fellowship at the Newberry Library in Chicago and is working on his second book project, which explores the relationship between sound and the city of Chicago.
