Dear University Community,
Last year, the Responsible Use of AI Working Group—co‑chaired by Regina Curran and Professor Leah Ding and composed of faculty and staff from across campus—was convened by Chief Information Officer Steve Munson and Provost Vicky Wilkins to develop University guidance for the use of AI. Throughout the 2024-2025 academic year and summer, the Working Group conducted extensive community outreach and reviewed practices, concerns, and aspirations related to AI from faculty, staff, and students.
We are pleased to share that the
University’s Guidance on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence is now complete and available to the community. This guidance reflects the Working Group’s careful deliberation and the valuable input provided by members of our campus community.
The final guidance includes:
- University‑wide recommendations for the responsible and ethical use of AI;
- Guidelines tailored to teaching, research, staff, and students; and
- Encouragement for AU departments, units, or organizations to develop their own guidance aligned with the principles outlined in the document.
As AI technologies continue to evolve, the University remains committed to transparency. This guidance will be reviewed and updated as technology and best practices develop. We encourage faculty, staff, and students to review this guidance and incorporate it into their academic, administrative, and research activities.
We thank the
members of the Working Group for their dedication and the broader community for its engagement and contributions.
Sincerely,
Steve Munson
