Tips for Grads: How to find the right balance

Personal and Interpersonal Effectiveness
Time is such a precious commodity, especially when you’re in graduate school. Trying to devote your attention to your current job or internship and your studies, while also balancing family, friends, and other priorities can be exhausting. As you try to perfect this difficult juggling act, try to remember to keep it LITE.
  • List. Take the time to write out all events and projects you have upcoming in the next month. Then narrow down your list each week by appropriate project due dates.
  • Importance. Rank each item by its importance to decide what you should prioritize.
  • Time. Figure out how long each task takes, factoring in some extra time for breaks. Check out this article from UW Health with more good tips on managing your time.
  • Eliminate. Decide what’s low on your priority list and eliminate it if possible, to help free up some vital personal time.

Wellness: Practice good computer habits

There are a few things you can do to alleviate this burden. Start by raising your monitor to eye level to prevent slouching or craning of the neck and consider investing in a standing desk to help prevent an endless cycle of sitting. Lastly, make sure you’re taking frequent breaks to get up and move as well as rest your eyes.
