Opening John Hunt Park Recreation Center
Council Member Bill Kling participated in the recent ribbon cutting festivities for the John Hunt Park Recreation Center. The 60,850 square foot facility includes a gym customizable to four high school regulation basketball courts or eight high school regulation volleyball courts as well as 25 covered pickleball courts.

Supporting Public Art in Mayfair Park
Council Member Kling recently attended the unveiling of “Lift”, a new public art piece by local artist Ann Moeller in Mayfair Park. The sculpture honors the site’s history as an airfield while celebrating its transformation into a place where children can play and dream.

Council Member Kling supported the sculpture by contributing funds from the District 4 Council Improvement Fund to help advance Arts Huntsville’s mission to expand the arts and make it more accessible to everyone.

Celebrating 250 Years on July 4 in Downtown  
Huntsville is ready to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday on Saturday, July 4, in downtown Huntsville with a celebration that includes something for everyone. The events include historical reenactments, a downtown parade, a massive birthday cake, concerts and a dramatic fireworks finale in Big Spring Park. All events are free.

City Leaders, Huntsville Schools Collaborate
The City Council and Huntsville City Schools (HCS) held a joint session June 1 to discuss collaboration between the City and the school system as Huntsville’s population continues to grow. Topics discussed at the meeting included the City's annual study on demographics and population growth trends, the HCS capital plan and a proposed tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Park and Recreation Month Means Fun
Nationally, July is Park and Recreation Month. In Huntsville, that translates to lots of fun. The City’s Parks & Recreation Department will roll out a series of popular family activities sure to make the summer’s highlight reel, culminating with Light Up the Night in Big Spring Park on Friday, July 31.

Road Resurfacing in District 4
The City Council recently approved funding for Phase 2 of the City’s road improvement plan for the 2026 fiscal year. The improvements include resurfacing and concrete work for neighborhood roads. Several streets in D4 are part of the projects. Some of those include:
  • Echols Avenue from Adams Street to White Street
  • Deborah Drive from Garth Road to Applachee Dr
  • Deborah Drive from Garth Road to end of street

Insight Into First Mayor's Youth Advisory Council
The first cohort of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council has ended and students who participated walked away with tremendous insight into the workings of City Hall as well as visions for improvements they would like to see. Ultimately, it opened a window to new possibilities. As one student said, “It inspired me to do more research.”

Helping Pets in Fireworks Season
The numbers tell a remarkable story but the compassion for pets from the Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) team can’t be explained so easily. At the second-annual “Boom Proof Your Pet,” more than 300 pets were served at a free event designed to help protect dogs and cats who may become frightened by the boom of fireworks and run away.

Council Member Kling will hold his monthly town meeting on Monday, July 20, from 6-7 p.m. at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library downtown branch, 915 Monroe St. SW.
