USING YOUR IRA AS A MEANS FOR CHARITABLE GIVING

If you are at or over the age of 70 and have an IRA, you probably know that federal law requires you to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from the account annually. What you may not know, is you can make charitable gifts directly from your IRA as qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) and these count towards your RMD. Because a QCD reduces income and is not an itemized deduction, this benefits even investors who do not itemize.  To be tax-free, the donation must go directly from the account to the recipient charity without passing through the investor’s hands. Your bank, brokerage or fund manager who administers your IRA can easily facilitate a QCD on your behalf to organizations like the Warm Hearth Foundation. They can also provide more information on this topic. We appreciate you considering the Warm Hearth Foundation in your annual giving. To learn more about the diverse giving options available through the Warm Hearth Foundation, please call Amy Webb at 540-443-3413.

STEVE'S SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIP

Thermostats
Instead of putting your thermostat on 70 degrees year-round, use a range of temperatures (68 to 74 degrees). During Spring and Fall, we turn off the system when we can.

Electronics

When not in use, turn off computers, TVs, etc. Even better, unplug them. Many electronic devices ‘vampire’ electricity even when off. Power strips can help with this.

Lights
Turn them off! Use energy-saving light bulbs. LED bulbs use 90% less energy than incandescent.

Laundry
Use cold water. Up to 90% of your electricity usage comes from using heated water. Air dry your clothes!
Think of other ways you can use less electricity. Challenge yourself and your family!

Sustainably,
Steve Watkins, Production Manager
