A legendary Canadian sports mogul who helped create professional football and hockey leagues that later collapsed is the subject of a biography by Denis M. Crawford, adjunct faculty of Communications. The Life and Teams of Johnny F. Bassett: Maverick Entrepreneur of North American Sports chronicles Bassett’s adventures in professional sports, including signing three members of the reigning Super Bowl champions for his fledgling World Football League team, his audacious marketing of hockey in Alabama and his rivalry with Donald Trump for the U.S. Football League. Crawford, who earned a master’s degree in History from YSU, is also managing editor of The Coffin Corner, official magazine of the Professional Football Researchers Association.

Susan Wright Clutter, associate professor of Chemical and Biological Sciences, is the lead author of the new textbook, So You Want to be A CSI? The book includes chapters on firearms evidence, death investigations, fingerprints, crime scene photography, DNA and much more. The book also features a link to a virtual reality crime scene so students can practice their skills along with the textbook. Clutter, who holds a bachelor's degree in Biology from Clark University and a master's of Forensic Science from George Washington University, came to YSU in 2010 after 10 years as a crime scene investigator with two police departments in Maryland.

Lori Fusco, assistant professor of Nursing, along with Amy Weaver, associate professor of Nursing, published the article “Medication Safety Competence of Undergraduate Nursing Students" in the Clinical Simulation in Nursing journal. The article examines the abilities of junior- and senior-level Nursing students in one of the major responsibilities for nurses: the administration of medication. Results can guide undergraduate curriculum planning to improve medication safety competencies in Nursing students.

Kyosung Choo, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering, and his students recently published four scholarly articles: “Heat transfer characteristics of two-phase impinged jet flow and channel flow” in Heat Transfer Engineering with Junbeom Son, Nathan Lin and John Simcox; "Simulation of a Research Data Centre Room in an Academic Campus” in International Conference on Fluid Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer, with Khaled Alsharif and Kyosung Choo; “Thermal Simulation of Big Area Additive Manufacturing” in International Conference on Fluid Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer with Brian Friedrich and Kyosung Choo; and “Thermal Stress Simulation Model of Dissimilar Linear Friction Welding Technology for Manufacturing of Bi-Metallic Biomedical Implant,” in ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference with Aspen Glaspell, Christina Seydlorsky, Jae Joong Ryu and Kyosung Choo.

Isam E. Amin and Alan M. Jacobs, faculty in the Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geology and Environmental Sciences, and their graduate advisees, recently published “Correlation between the rates and mortality of ischemic heart disease and magnesium concentrations in Ohio drinking water” in the International Journal of Ecological Economics and Statistics.

Deepa G. Iyer, assistant professor of Management, published “Overcoming Technological Inequity in Synchronous Online Learning” in Communications of the Association for Information Systems. The journal is intended to foster the free flow of ideas within the Information Systems discipline. Iyer holds a PhD in Information Systems-Design and Innovation from Case Western Reserve University and a master's in Information Technology from Fachhochschule Esslingen - Hochschule für Sozialwesen Esslingen in Germany. She previously was a software engineer and IT consultant and joined the YSU faculty in 2018.

Jake Protivnak, professor and director of the Counseling Program, along with Emily Herman and Danielle Matos, adjunct faculty of Counseling, published the article “Addressing the Unrecognized Grief of Elementary Students Experiencing Relationship Loss” in the Journal of School Counseling. The article reviews the concept of unrecognized grief experienced by elementary students due to relationship loss and provides school counselors with individual, group and system-wide strategies.

Leslie Page, director of First Year Student Services, is the 2020-21 Recipient of the Fayetta M. Paulsen Accomplished Leader Award through the Ohio College Personnel Association. The award is presented to a student affairs professional who has made significant contributions to the field and their institution. Page earned a bachelor’s in Communications from Bowling Green State University and a master’s in Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel from Kent State University. She worked seven years at the University of South Florida as a residence life coordinator and in the Office of Orientation before coming to YSU in 2014.

Maria Fenty Denison, lecturer, Visual and Dramatic Arts, has been accepted into a competitive training program for Lessac Kinesensic Voice and Body Training at DePauw University in Indiana. The method, used by colleges and universities, theatre companies and research institutions throughout the United States and abroad, was developed by State University of New York professor emeritus Arthur Lessac.

Amy Weaver, associate professor of Nursing, has been reappointed to the National League for Nursing's Research Grant Review Panel. The panel reviews submissions for NLN’s Nursing Education Research Grants Program. Weaver, who has served on the panel since 2015, was reappointed until 2013.

Faculty in the YSU Cliffe College of Creative Arts continue to keep tight performance and exhibition schedules, including:
- James Umble, professor of Saxophone, who performed a contemporary work for solo saxophone by composer/theorist Dr. Andrew Mead from Indiana University at the International Conference for Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy, hosted by the University of Florida. The work was written for and dedicated to Umble by Mead. Umble has been presenting lectures on Mead's music with Mead as co-presenter at recent professional conferences and has performed his music extensively in recent years.
- Cicilia Yudha, associate professor, who presented a lecture/recital titled "Debussy’s Affair with Gamelan: GAME-Land No. 5 for Piano, Playing Hand, Voice, Kemanak, and Javanese Gong-Ageng by Slamet Abdul Sjukur (1935-2015)" at the 2021 College Music Society Southern Chapter Regional Conference. She will make a similar presentation at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in July. Both conferences are virtual.
- Pianist Caroline Oltmanns, professor in the Dana School of Music, presents a live stream concert Sunday, March 21, as part of the Tri-C Community College Concert Series 2020-21, featuring works by Debussy, Wilding, Gulda and Beethoven. That same day, Oltmanns performs at the Bop Stop in Cleveland as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild. To access the stream, visit Bop Stop's Facebook page. In addition, Oltmanns will give a pre-concert talk for international concert pianist Emanuel Ax on March 25 at E. J. Thomas Hall in Akron, part of the Akron Tuesday Musical concert series. And, she will give a presentation titled “Piano Technique - An Overview from a Historic and Personal Perspective” at the Cleveland Institute of Music on March 23. She recently gave the same presentation for the Mid-Cities Music Teachers Association (Texas) and the Western Reserve Music Teachers Association (Ohio).
- Amanda Beagle-Bossio, part-time faculty, Visual and Dramatic Arts, performed a sold-out Valentine’s Day concert, "Let's Fall in Love," with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra Jazz Combo at the Ford Family Recital Hall, DeYor Performing Arts Center. The orchestra included Dana part-time faculty member Jack Ciarniello, piano, and Dana Professor Christopher Krummel, trumpet.

Artwork by Claudia Berlinski, director of the McDonough Museum of Art, was included in two recent exhibitions: “Invitational Art Show - Excellence/Defining Space” at Peninsula Art Academy in Peninsula, Ohio, and “Unbound: The Altered Book” at Chico Art Center in Chico, Calif. She also has her piece Closer Than They Appear: Winter Thaw featured in the February issue of Apero. Berlinski holds a master’s in Fine Arts in Printmaking from Ohio State University and has worked at YSU since 2000.

Dragana Crnjak, professor of Art, is preparing an exhibition titled “Peripheries” that will open April 2 at the Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Va. Crnjak, a native of Bosnia, who has exhibited internationally, nationally and regionally and her work is included in numerous private and public collections, holds a master’s of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a recipient of Individual Excellence Awards in visual arts from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008, 2011 and 2015 and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship in 2004.

Joe D’Uva, associate professor of Art, and students currently enrolled in Printmaking are working with Philadelphia-based artist Amze Emmons to create an edition of prints. Production will transpire throughout March and include live collaboration sessions via Webex. D’Uva, who holds a master’s in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, also has work in The Cul-de-sac Print Exchange Exhibition at the Davis Fine Arts Gallery at West Virginia State University.

Julie Seitz, director of Dual Enrollment and Student Support Services, and Senior Lecturer Lori Carlson, both in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, were invited panelists for the SOVA Virtual Clinic titled "Leading and Implementing Large-Scale Change: A Conversation with Practitioners." They shared experiences and challenges in implementing co-requisite support for gateway math and stats courses as part of Ohio's Strong Start to Finish initiative. Watch.

Richard VanVoorhis, associate professor of Psychological Sciences and Counseling, presented “International School Psychology Program Collaboration: Our Cup of Tea” at the National Association of School Psychologists Annual Conference. The presentation focused on a 10-day study abroad experience in England involving a dozen students in YSU’s School Psychology program. VanVoorhis and Ken Miller, professor of Psychological Sciences and Counseling, also presented “Strategies to Promote Parental Resilience: Obstacles and Solutions.” The presentation included findings of school psychologist focus groups to help promote strategies for increasing parental resilience for families of children diagnosed with low-incidence disabilities.
