You know it is really, truly snowing in Minneapolis when the accumulation is causing Metro Transit delays.
But how much are we going to get? And how will it last?
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Twin Cities through midnight tonight. And Tim Harlow reports that we could see between 4 and 7 inches along and north of Interstate 94, while 3 to 6 inches might accumulate in southern and southwestern Minnesota.
Essential Minnesota readers probably don't need to hear this, but NWS is also advising commuters to watch out for slick roads on the way in to work today — and likely on the way home. (Your friendly neighborhood newsletter writer is personally avoiding Lake Street as much as possible for the next week.)
“Allow extra time to get to your destination and remember, take it slow," the Weather Service said.
The highs will stay well below freezing through the weekend, meteorologist Paul Douglas reports. That means we'll have snow on the ground through much of the weekend, though Douglas says models predict highs above 32 degrees starting Monday through New Year's Day.
Even so, it's likely enough snow will stick around that we'll have a white Christmas here in the Twin Cities.
We know it's been awhile since the metro area got a legitimate snow day, so we rounded up a few helpful links — plus the weather outlook — at the links below.
