In this season of thanks, I can't think of a better example of pure thankfulness than a senior dog. Having a senior Labrador Retriever myself, I am reminded daily how precious each moment we have with our dogs truly is. If you're considering getting a new dog, I would highly recommend considering an older dog. It might just be the best decision you've ever made! Here are my top five reasons for considering a senior pet:
#1: The transition will likely be smoother.
Bringing home a younger dog often involves a pretty hectic transition period. Whether you're adopting or purchasing a dog from a breeder, younger dogs will need constant monitoring, especially in the first few weeks after coming into your home.

Check out the awesome Positively Success Story of Humphrey, a Bernese Mountain Dog rescued from a puppy mill. He overcome extreme fear and lack of socialization with the help of positive training methods.
"Humphrey was rescued from a puppy mill 1 year ago after spending approx 5 years in a cage. His health issues were the easiest thing to overcome. For the first 3 months he cowered in a hole he dug in the backyard.
He would not look at you and would not stand when you were near him. We ignored suggestions such as – you should put him down, you need to put him on drugs, you need to force him. We watched every episode of "It's me or the Dog" we could get our hands on...."

Positively Contributor Sarah Lukemire talks about some great activities to do with your dog during cold weather.
As I was looking at the 10-day forecast, it seems apparent that winter is here to stay (and we all knew it was coming). Winter in Minnesota can mean week upon week of not too many long walks or trips to the park with the dogs. Especially when you have two short-haired mutts who shiver when the temps hit below freezing!

Not sure about yours, but our dogs let us know when we go even a single day without a good, long walk or run. There is an obvious abundance of built up energy. So how on earth do we make it through winter without our dogs (and quite frankly, ourselves) losing their minds?

Here are five ideas for entertaining our four-legged friends through the cold months...

TOP TIP
Your Thanksgiving turkey might be in danger if you have a counter surfing pup!
Put yourself in the dog's paws and place your favorite food on the counter when you are hungry. Now walk past and see if you can resist taking a bite. The most realistic solution to counter surfing is a combination of management and training techniques.
Blocking access to places where food is left out by using baby gates or putting the dog in another room when you have company means there is no opportunity for your dog to fail.
You can also teach a reliable 'Stay' cue, and then teach your dog to stay behind an imaginary line in the kitchen. Read more...
