A BEACON OF HOPE, DURING UNCERTAIN TIMES
In 2024, Warm Hearth provided financial support and subsidies to 32 residents monthly, totaling $1.2 million -- up from $900,000 just one year before. We depend upon a wide variety of funding sources, some of which may now be in jeopardy. Through the generosity of donors, The Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment enables our mission and provides a lifeline for seniors facing financial hardship. It’s more than a fund – it’s a promise to our seniors that we’re here with a safety net of support.
Your gift helps sustain not only our residents, but also the compassionate teams who care for them—through the Karen L. Hanks Leadership Endowment and the Employee Growth & Development Fund.
You can be a beacon of hope. Press the donate button below to make your gift and help secure the future for our seniors.

HOW IS THIS EVEN LEGAL?
PROTECTING SENIORS FROM FINANCIAL SCAMS
Friday, May 9 at 1:30 PM | Village Center, 2387 Warm Hearth Dr., Blacksburg
Fraud targeting older adults is on the rise, and some of the most damaging tactics are technically legal. Join us for an eye-opening presentation to learn how scammers exploit loopholes in the law to deceive seniors and drain their savings.
Our guest speaker, Wyatt Sweat, is a PhD student in Computer Science at Virginia Tech with 15 years of experience in electronic theft prevention. He’ll walk us through real-world examples of these gray-area scams and explain how they fit into the broader landscape of elder fraud. Wyatt will also share insights into his current research at Warm Hearth Village and how you can get involved.
This is an important conversation you won’t want to miss—because awareness is the first step in prevention.

CHEERS FOR CALCIUM
We all know calcium is key for strong bones, but it also plays an essential role in muscle function, nerve transmission, and even hormone secretion. As we age, our bodies absorb less calcium—so it’s more important than ever to make sure we’re getting enough from the foods we eat.
Boost your intake with naturally calcium-rich foods like broccoli, bok choy, kale, and dairy products. Planning a spring get-together? Try a refreshing caprese salad, broccoli salad, or kale salad as a tasty and healthy side. For snacks, reach for cottage cheese, yogurt, or your favorite cheese slices. And if those options aren’t your thing, look for calcium-fortified orange juice, cereal, or soy milk.
Talk to your doctor before starting any supplements—and let’s raise a glass (of milk or fortified OJ!) to stronger bones and better health.
