Thank You, Dog Lovers!
As we settle in to a new year, I want to share a moment of thanks for the success of our last dog show. We definitely couldn't make a show of it without our major sponsor Purina® Pro Plan®, the facilities and staff of the NRG Center and YOU - the people who love dogs!
It is such a blessing that Houstonians and visitors from throughout the region and beyond continue to enjoy the five-day series of conformation and performance events -- drawing approximately 2,000 competitors.
We accomplished a lot in 2016. In addition to our promotional partnership with the national Clear the Shelters' campaign, we welcomed Dr Kruger's Pet Supplements and Greensheet Media as new sponsors. The performance events schedule introduced BHA Licensed Barn Hunt Trials, and our judges workshops and dog health clinics were well attended. As always, the bustling McScotty Market was near capacity with 170 commercial and 100 nonprofit vendors and breed-specific rescue groups. In case you missed any of the summer's festivities, this issue includes notes and links to recap some of the highlights.
On behalf of the HWSDS staff and afilitiates, we hope to see you this summer. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 40th annual dog show to be held July 19-23, 2017 in NRG Center.
Happy New Year,
Tom Pincus Chairman, HWSDS

For over 133 years, the American Kennel Club, a not-for-profit organization, has been the trusted resource for information, products and services that promote the well-being of dogs. The AKC offers a variety of activities for dogs of all ages, from our S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen programs to more than 22,000 annual canine sports events. There is an abundance of opportunities for you to participate with your dog. On the AKC website, you can find dog health, care and training advice, search for upcoming events, and join the community of dog lovers through registering or enrolling your dog. If you’re looking for a puppy, you can research different breeds and find responsible breeders through AKC Marketplace, as well as obtain information about AKC’s Rescue Network. The American Kennel Club also works to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership, including the nationwide initiative, AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day. The 2016 Clear the Shelters national pet adoption campaign was dubbed a howling success. Only in its second year, the event more than doubled the number of adoptions made. An initiative of NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, it brought together more than 40 local NBC and Telemundo stations with hundreds of animal shelters nationwide to offer no-cost or reduced-fee adoptions or waived spay and neuter fees. The results are impressive with totals surpassing 47,000 pet adoptions nationwide. The figure includes 2,577 animals that have found new homes in and around the Houston area thanks in part to coverage by our local KPRC 2 and Telemundo stations. Here are some of the lucky dogs!

One of the outstanding exhibits at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows is the "Best Little Doghouse in Texas" Designer Doghouse Competition put on by Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP). For the past 12 years, CAP has rallied individuals, scouts and corporate businesses to "think outside the cage" and create an one-of-a-kind doghouse to pique the interest of the dog show visitors and entice them to bid on their favorite or make a silent auction bid on one to take home. The builders of these unique creations are vying to win one of the three categories not only to receive a prize but also garner bragging rights for a year. Of course, the true winners are the homeless animals at the CAP shelter that are seeking a forever home. All funds raised at the event go directly to support the programs that provide care for the animals during their stays and provide other services such as humane education and feral cat trapping to reduce pet overpopulation. The winners for the 2016 contest are pictured below left to right as: PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - The American Dream Works in Wood, Joyce Hernandez
KID'S CHOICE AWARD - Salty Dog Beach Shack Grace Guillory - Girl Scout
DIXIE'S CHOICE AWARD - Dog Cave Benjamin Kuhn - Eagle Scout Anyone can enter, so get those creative juices going. Contact Trisha Royal to sign up for the competition in 2017!

One of the many breed-specific rescue groups represented at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows is The Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue. An all-volunteer organization, it is dedicated to the rescue, rehab and re-homing of abused, abandoned and neglected Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos turned in by owners or rescued from shelters, animal control or puppy mills. Each animal is given thorough veterinarian care, spayed or neutered and vaccinated when needed.
The organization works without paid staff or a physical shelter, and all dogs are placed in foster homes prior to adoption. Dogs in need receive 100-percent of funds raised.
As you make any year-end contributions or consider volunteer options for the new year, please note that LSSTLAR is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and your donations may be tax deductible. For more information on fostering or adopting a Shih Tzu or Lhasa Apso from Lone Star, apply above.
