Medicaid, Disability & Wheelchair Equipment Under Attack!

Faced with a healthcare plan that would end the Medicaid entitlement and slash Medicaid spending, and a proposed budget that would cut SSI, SSDI and food stamps, ICS Civics League members have been visiting their members of Congress to make their opinions known. Members also travelled to Washington in April to press their representatives to protect access to complex rehab items they depend on. These include mechanisms that raise and lower wheelchairs, customized seating accessories that protect again pressure sores, and technologies that allow someone with severe disabilites to control a wheelchair or other equipment through breath or eye movement. Access to these essential items will end unless Congress acts by June 30 to protect them from funding cuts. Learn more about this issue here.

Confused About Medicaid Eligibility? We Can Help
Are Medicaid guidelines confusing to you or the people your organization serves in the community?  If so, we can help. Our Community Engagement Medicaid Manager provides free education on Medicaid eligibility and the many nuances of the Medicaid program to older adults and people with disabilities, as well their caregivers and professional staff working with these populations. This includes, for example, pooled trusts, which can support someone whose income exceeds the Medicaid threshold to obtain Medicaid while keeping their excess income.
If you would like a presentation for professional staff or seniors and/or people with disabilities your organization serves, please contact Danny Perry, Director of Community Engagement, at dperry@icsny.org or 646.653.6194.  You can also learn about ICS’s Medicaid support services by downloading our Medicaid flyer here or viewing our short video here.
ICS also conducts free presentations on managed long-term care (MLTC), highlighting the eligibility requirements and services provided. In addition, we can also discuss ICS’s specialized programs and services, including our comprehensive wheelchair program and Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Services (CDPAS), which enable Medicaid eligible individuals receiving homecare to hire, train, and supervise their own personal care aides, including most family members.
You can learn more about all of ICS’s specialized programs and services here.

Palliative Care
is Not Hospice

When an ICS member has a serious condition that cannot be cured and the person is suffering in some way, palliative care allows us to focus on what matters most to the member.  That’s why ICS is proud to announce a new partnership with the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), a program of Mt. Sinai Hospital. This relationship will help us increase our ability to provide excellent palliative services focused on our members’ individual wishes for their quality of life. Read more here.
Happy Pride Month!
