All About Arson Dogs
This month has marked the release of a huge project that I’m incredibly excited about: my Arson Dogs web series. The first episode was released via my Youtube channel and the new Positively Media Center earlier this month. You can look forward to plenty of excitement and drama as new episodes are released each week. I’m thrilled to share this series with you; it is a rare chance to see working dogs up close, and to see how even high-drive dogs can be trained using force-free, positive methods. Enjoy!

Behind the Scenes: Interview
John Galaska is one of the stars of the Arson Dogs series. As a backup handler in Delaware, he never had the opportunity to work a dog himself. Now, John has the opportunity to take the leash and join the ranks as Delaware’s newest arson dog handler. We caught up with him for a chat about how things are going after the filming of the show...
POSITIVELY: What was the your biggest challenge during the arson dog training program?

JOHN:

How to Choose the Right Dog Trainer
For most modern dog owners, choosing the right dog trainer is one of the most important decisions they will make for their dog. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most difficult decisions to get right.
You will be faced with a variety of claims: to be the only dog trainers in the world who hold the key to lifelong obedience and happiness. Many offer guarantees (more on that later), some claim to be zen-like coaches ready to help you become your dog's 'pack leader' (red alert!), and others charge more per hour than trained human psychologists (don't be fooled).

So how do you navigate through this minefield of options and emerge with a truly qualified positive trainer who will work with you and your dog using modern, force-free, science-based tools and techniques?

Leash Aggression
Does Your Dog Suffer From Leash Aggression?
Positively Contributor Alex Andes shares her insights about how you can help your dog overcome it.
If you’ve ever had a leash reactive dog, then you know the feeling of dread that accompanies you on every walk. My dog, Penny, was attacked on-leash, and suddenly my otherwise friendly dog turned into Cujo whenenver she was attached to a leash!

I quickly grew tired of trying to avoid contact with all living creatures, so I was determined to help Penny and I enjoy our walks again. Now, I have a confident dog... who isn't perfect, but is completely manageable and we do enjoy our time outside together.

How did I do it? How can you do the same with your leash reactive dog?

Positive vs. Punitive training
TOP TIP
Harsh punishments used by punitive trainers are not only cruel and potentially dangerous but they also damage the trust between dog and human.
Punitive trainers often argue that these are effective methods of punishment because they stop dogs from repeating negative behavior. Punishment is most likely to work immediately, but the experience of it can make dogs feel insecure and wary of their owners.  It is common for dogs that are punished harshly to keep reoffending - simply because they have not been shown another way to behave.
Harsh punishment relies on suppressing behavior but does not truly change it. The dog’s behavior might be suppressed for a time but he still feels the same inside and is likely to react again more intensely, sometimes without giving a clear warning if warning signals have been suppressed through punishment.
