To the Andover campus community:
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we write to express our thoughts of care and concern in this extraordinary time. Ever-present in our minds is the emotional toll this public health crisis has placed on families and friends, the campus community, and the greater Andover community. And, we write to express our profound gratitude for the exceptional way that you all have stepped up to respond.
The entire crisis team, anchored by Jim Ventre ’79, is demonstrating exceptional leadership during this unprecedented moment in our history. Faculty are exploring new ways of teaching with great courage and ingenuity. Staff and administrators are supporting these efforts with patience and flexibility. Throughout the challenges and disruption, Jim has shared inspiring stories of colleagues lifting one another’s spirits or responding to a student’s needs, always having each other’s backs. For these acts of kindness and so many more, we are deeply grateful.
We are also grateful to our students and families for their patience and perseverance as we continue to make painful decisions in rapidly evolving circumstances. We want our students to know that every decision we make begins with your wellbeing in our minds and hearts. You chose Andover as your high school home. Throughout these challenging times, no matter where you are, please know how much we value you as a member of our unique community.
To our students and especially the class of 2020, this spring term will not unfold as you had hoped or expected. There will, undoubtedly be moments of frustration and even anger. But we know that your collective spirits of curiosity, intellectual passion, and concern for each other will pull you through. We encourage you to find strength in community and creativity, and to be open to new Andover experiences that could only have happened in this historic moment.
Rest assured, when the time is right, Class of 2020, we will find a way to reunite and celebrate you. We look forward to that moment even as we empathize with your current sense of loss and disappointment. Remember also, that Andover is for life. Your personal growth, the friendships you’ve made, and your myriad accomplishments cannot be diminished by this or any future crisis.
It’s heartening to know that faculty, students, and staff are finding ways to come together in virtual environments, from kitchen tables and home offices, from basements and front porches. Despite the challenges of conducting Academy business and delivering education remotely, we remain optimistic, knowing that Andover is a resilient and compassionate global community. Our core ideal of non sibi calls us to lift one another, no matter the challenge. We are privileged to be part of an institution that has consistently acted on its community values over its 243-year history.
Teaching, learning, and doing business from every quarter, Andover will prevail and emerge even stronger having weathered these extraordinary times together.
We close with best wishes for your health and wellbeing.
