VOLLEY, LAUGH, REPEAT! DISCOVER POOL VOLLEYBALL

Looking for a fun and refreshing way to stay active this winter? Pool Volleyball at Warm Hearth might be just what you’re looking for! Our lively group meets every Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 PM, and whether you're a seasoned player or brand new to the game, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Even better — no height advantage needed! The deep end is just 4’5”, making the game accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Beyond being incredibly fun, Pool Volleyball is a great workout. The water provides natural resistance that helps build strength and burn calories. More importantly, our group offers camaraderie, encouragement, and a little extra motivation to keep moving all winter long. Celebrate the spirit of the season with a festive lineup of concerts, celebrations, and holiday cheer at Warm Hearth Village! These events are free, open to the public (unless noted), and sure to fill your December with joy. Mark your calendars and gather with your friends and neighbors for these memorable holiday traditions.

Old World Christmas Celebration

Monday, December 1 | 10:00 to 12:00 NOON
The Village Center – 2387 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg

Start the month with a charming Old World Christmas Celebration inspired by Ms. Mardy Fezziwig’s holiday festivities. Enjoy a visit from “Virginia’s Favorite Santa,” Mrs. Claus, and their delightfully comical elf. Guests will enjoy brunch treats, carols, a complimentary gift-wrapping station (limit 5 gifts), a festive orange-and-clove make-and-take craft, holiday photo spots, and more! This event is free and open to everyone. Brunch and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase (optional).

Blacksburg Community Strings & Chamber Orchestra

Friday, December 5 at 7:00 PM & Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 PM
The Village Center – 2387 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg

Enjoy Folk Songs and Stories, a beautifully curated concert featuring traditional tunes and modern reflections from Grainger, Copland, Whitacre, Vaughn Williams, and more. Seasonal selections include favorites from The Lord of the Dance, Frozen, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Admission is free, and donations are welcome to support this local nonprofit ensemble.

HearthSong Singers Christmas Concert

The Grinchiest of Grinch Parties

Monday, December 22 | 3:00 to 4:30 PM

End the holiday season with a mischievous mix of games, crafts, and good-natured grumpiness! Enjoy holiday trivia Jeopardy (with buzzers!), prizes, a “Best Bah-Hum-Bug Ugly Sweater” contest, refreshments, and the chance to make your own ugly stocking. Hosted by the Housing Team and Life Enrichment, this playful, over-the-top party guarantees laughter—even for the grinchiest among us!

SWEETEN YOUR SEASON WITH HOLIDAY TREATS

The Huckleberry Café is also offering a delicious selection of Holiday Sweet Treats to make your season even merrier. Treat yourself (and your guests!) to fresh-baked cookies, peppermint and walnut brownies, banana nut bread, and even specialty dog treats for your furry friends.

A SEASON OF GRATITUDE & GIVING

Thank you to our residents and families who so generously support Warm Hearth’s efforts to honor and thank our employees for their tremendous loyalty to all who call the Village home. Your gifts make it possible for us to provide service awards, celebrations, holiday gift cards, and departmental support to 340 employees across all areas of our continuum. This year, our goal for this campaign is $35,000, and we are proud to share that we plan to increase the amount of our holiday gift cards for our newest employees to ensure these gifts are commensurate with our level of appreciation for their hard work.

The Warm Hearth Foundation’s Silver Santa program has matched a record number of residents with Santas this year. Approximately 130 seniors will have a brighter Christmas thanks to the commitment of many community partners and individuals who support this effort. Gifts and good cheer will be delivered by Warm Hearth elves the week of December 8. Thank you to all involved in this heart-warming program for your support of our residents in need.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THIS WINTER!

Winter brings cozy gatherings and festive fun — but it also brings the sniffles. The good news? A few simple habits can help keep your immune system strong all season long. Fill your plate with colorful, vitamin-packed foods like citrus fruits, broccoli, spinach, and especially red bell peppers — a powerhouse of vitamin C. Add zinc-rich foods such as nuts, legumes, seafood, tofu, and lean beef to help your body bounce back faster when you do catch a bug. Stay hydrated with water and warm teas, and try to limit dairy (which may increase mucus for some people) and cut back on sweets, which can slow your immune response.

Of course, healthy habits go beyond the kitchen. Prioritize sleep, stay active, and aim for movement every day — even if that means bundling up or trying new indoor exercises. With just a few intentional choices, you can stay energized, healthy, and ready to enjoy everything winter has to offer!

Roasted Red Pepper Holiday Soup
4 red bell peppers (roasted or jarred, drained)
1 onion (chopped)
2 carrots (chopped)
2 garlic cloves
3 cups vegetable broth
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp smoked paprika
Salt & pepper

Directions
Sauté onion, carrots, and garlic in olive oil until soft.
Add roasted red peppers, broth, and seasoning.
Simmer 15–20 minutes.
Blend until smooth.

Optional: swirl of coconut milk (immune-friendly, dairy-free!)

While regular phone calls keep us in touch, an in-person visit may reveal changes that aren’t always easy to detect from afar.

During your visit, take a moment to gently assess a few key areas:

Personal care: Are they clean, well-groomed, and dressed appropriately?
Health changes: Have you noticed differences in weight, mobility, or energy levels?
Home safety: Is their living space tidy, organized, and free of fall hazards?
Driving: Do they seem comfortable and safe behind the wheel, both day and night?
Social connection: Are they staying active, involved, and engaged with friends or community?

If anything raises concern, begin with a calm, compassionate conversation. Share what you’ve noticed, listen to their perspective, and explore solutions together. And remember—you don’t have to navigate these challenges alone.
