Dear friends,
As we begin the fall semester, I want to share with you where we are, and what lies ahead.
This will be my final year as your dean. I began this work in the summer of 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, and what has kept me steady through every hard decision since is the community around me. The students who arrived with excitement, whether online or in person.

The faculty who brought excellence and mentoring to every student, regardless of circumstances. The alumni who gave selflessly to their alma mater. The staff who held this place together without fail and always with a smile. There have been hard chapters. There have also been triumphs I never imagined at the outset. You have taught me what a mission-driven law school looks like, and I will carry that with me for the rest of my career.
There is a particular grace in the timing. In February 2027, we will celebrate the centennial of St. Mary’s Law, 100 years since the first classes were taught in the courthouse by lawyers who believed San Antonio deserved a law school of its own. To close my deanship in the year we mark that milestone feels less like a coincidence and more like providence. We have a lot to celebrate this year, and I am delighted we will do it together.
I am also grateful to share that, after a sabbatical year, I plan to remain a member of this faculty. Whoever leads St. Mary’s Law next will have my full support, and I will continue teaching, mentoring and building alongside all of you as a member of the Catholic and Marianist community I have loved since the day I arrived.
Thank you for six extraordinary years. Let’s make this seventh one worthy of the century behind us and the century ahead.

Clinics provide invaluable experience to students,
life-changing assistance to community members
|
Each semester, St. Mary’s Law students build lawyering skills and earn academic credit by enrolling in one of our six Clinical Program courses: the Consumer Protection, Criminal Justice, Family Law, Immigration and Human Rights, Microenterprise and Community Development, and Real Estate Clinics.

Under the guidance of our expert Clinic Faculty and Staff Attorneys, students represent real clients in real legal matters — clients who could not otherwise afford legal representation.
Through their clinic work, students gain skills they will take into practice. Students also provide an essential community service and gain a deeper understanding of the issues and challenges facing their clients.

Executive director joins Law Advancement team

|
Sean Harlow, J.D., joined St. Mary's Law as the Executive Director of Law Advancement. He brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education and independent school advancement. Harlow held leadership roles at Harvard Law School, Rice University and Washburn University School of Law, where he built lasting relationships with alumni, donors and volunteers while advancing philanthropy through annual, major and planned giving.

As he begins this new chapter at St. Mary’s Law, Harlow looks forward to meeting alumni and friends across Texas and around the country. Whether reconnecting at alumni events, visiting in their hometowns or welcoming graduates back to campus, he is eager to hear their St. Mary’s stories, learn what the School of Law has meant in their lives and careers, and explore ways they can remain engaged in shaping its next century of leadership, service and justice.
