The Year in Review for District 8

Here are some highlights as referenced int the Community Newsletters releases in 2016
JANUARY 2016
January 2016  was a month of heavy preparation. I was invited to participate in the Mayor's Office of Innovation Project, Ideas 2 Reality. 
The hubNashville project came from many hours of work that lead to this successful project's funding later in the year.
FEBRUARY 2016
February was a time to talk about SIDEWALKS with Metropolitan Nashville Department of Public Works and Metro Nashville-Davidson County Planning Department Thank you, Jason, Jonathan, Philip and Adams!
I also asked Public Works to specifically look at a way for safe pedestrian passage of Maplewood High School Students to cross over to Studio615 at Broadmoor and Walton.
MARCH 2016
Fabulous morning at the Patriot Place ribbon cutting. Every veteran should have a place they call home. Welcome with me 32 new District 8 residents to Madison's own amazing, new, and affordable housing development for homeless veterans.  Very impressed by the generosity & neighborly welcome from the Madison Elks Lodge 2473 for the folks at Patriot Place on Williams Ave.
APRIL 2016
I was happy to have new District 8 Beautification Commissioner Abby Tolen confirmed in April of 2016. 
All Together Madison sponsored a Transit Information Ride Around with MTA.
The PIP (Public Investment Project) called The HUB that I worked on in Dec/Jan. was presented to the Mayor and full funding was secured

MAY 2016
 
I opened my 3rd season as the volunteer Farmers Market Manager at Amqui Station Farmers Market. We ran another 18 weeks this year. In our first three seasons we served 13,811 visitors, 2730 tours,2,000 volunteer hours, $5987 SNAP match benefits and an economic impact of $128,825.  I wish Discover Madison well in its production of Season 4 next May!
Also in May, the alarm went off to do our best to save the Historic Masonic building on Hart found on the TBI campus.
JUNE 2016
18 miles of Spring Paving took place!
A look at the possibilities for Oakwood Park get serious attention.  Momentum builds for the new road soon to be called Station Blvd.
JULY 2016
Metro Budget Passes:
$1M for Oakwood Park ✔️, $6M for Road extension at Neely's Bend to the West ✔️, $300k for Metro Arts (Metro Nashville Arts Commission) ✔️, 50k for Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control intake diversion officer ✔️, Raises for Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County employees ✔️, $10M for Affordable Housing via Barnes Fund ✔️ -- $6M Memorial Hospital ownership transfer to Charles Jones now rebranding as Due West Towers ✔️ housing of all types and ranges started from Gallatin and Curdwood to Dickerson near OHB ✔️, an independent coffee house to open on OHB near Marthona✔️ - Streets getting paved, storm water being addressed, sidewalks planned, stops signs and lights in or approved, Maplewood Comprehensive High School, MNPS continues to impress✔️Community conversations on MTA (Metro Transit Authority) and Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation and the Annexation into Urban Services while respecting local business J.E. McMurtry Disposal & Recycling, all underway ✔️ 
The Resolution urges the State of Tennessee to "preserve, not demolish, the Home for Aged Masons and the Masonic Boys School located at the R.S. Gass State Complex" in Nashville's Inglewood neighborhood passed unanimously by Metro Council.
In addition, on July 12 Historic Nashville was joined by local and state officials to deliver our Petition to not demolish the Masonic Buildings to the State Architect and others. The petition now has over 1,500 signatures. Have you signed yet?
AUGUST 2016
  • Sidewalk at Maplewood Trace to Old Hickory Blvd
  • Traffic Light approved at Maplewood Highschool and Broadmoor
  • Historic Landmark Overlay for Maybelle 
    scheduled for review by the Planning Commission

SEPTEMBER 2016
Ronnie Road Storm Water work underway.
Madison-wide community meeting on General Service District (GSD) to Urban Service District (USD) took place after a year-long discussion at individual community meetings and open office hours.
After discussions and evaluations with Davidson County Property Assessor, this blog was written.
... Madison-area Councilwoman Nancy VanReece, who was elected last fall and plans to co-sponsor the legislation, said her constituents made it overwhelmingly clear during last year’s campaign that they hoped to move into the USD. VanReece’s District 8 currently includes both residents in the USD and GSD.

“It was something that I ran on and it’s something that I know District 8 is excited about,” VanReece said. “The opportunity for Mayor Barry to fulfill her promise of extending prosperity to the county line can be exhibited in this type of activity." -- The Tennesseean
OCTOBER 2016
  • Ground Breaking of the new St Thomas Clinic at Maplewood Highschool 
  • The Historic Landmark and Historic Landmark Overlay on Gibson passed unanimously at both the Historic and Planning Commission in September and the Community feedback took place in October.
NOVEMBER 2016

Thank you Clint Camp for helping secure the donation and Madison Community volunteer Kenneth White for always stepping up! Thank you Metropolitan Nashville Department of Public Works and Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation! Thank you School Board Vice Chair Jill Speering and the principals and staff at Maplewood Comprehensive High School, MNPSGra-Mar East Nashville and Madison Middle Prep! Thank you Hands On Nashville and the amazing volunteers that were on site!
