Updates to Student Survey of Teaching starting Spring 2026 |
KU Instructors:
Student evaluations are a key tool used to gather feedback from students about classroom experiences and instructor effectiveness. Student evaluations of teaching, in combination with other sources of feedback and reflection, serve to enhance teaching quality and inform faculty evaluations.
Beginning in spring 2026, the KU Student Survey of Teaching will have a revised format. These changes were made based on recommendations from the Student Survey of Teaching task force. This task force gathered information from faculty, GTAs, and students about how the survey could be improved to promote student engagement and provide useful feedback for instructors.

-
New and revised items. The revised survey allows students to give feedback on course administration, course content, teaching practices, class climate, and self-assessment of learning. The full set of survey items is available at this link.
-
Expanded response options. The revised survey uses a 4-point response scale, allowing for greater specificity than the previous 3-point scale.
- Unified survey design. For courses with a single instructor, students will now receive a single survey link for each course, rather than separate course and instructor survey links. This will reduce the number of invitations that students receive in an effort to prevent feelings of survey overload.
- Added feedback on teaching assistants. The revised survey allows for feedback on TAs who assist with the course, even if they are not listed as instructors.
-
Improved dashboard functionality. Instructor dashboards now include a “trend report” feature that allows instructors to examine and document student responses over time. Trend reports can be generated for both the 2021-2025 version of the survey and for the updated version.
