String Project Brings Private Lessons to Inner-city Kids
Geoffrey Herd is passionate about the violin, and is now working to share that passion with local students. Herd, a full-time lecturer in UT’s School of Music, recently obtained a $3,500 grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Arts Building Communities program to inspire Knoxville’s inner-city youth to take up string instruments.

World’s Top 2 Percent of Scientists List Includes More than 150 UT Faculty

study conducted by Stanford University researchers named 156 UT faculty members among the top 2 percent of scientists in the world for research citations. The list includes current and former scientists across more than 75 disciplines from UT Knoxville, the UT Institute of Agriculture, and the UT Space Institute.

The Office of Research and Engagement will host a SPARKS workshop on international research, featuring Rebecca Keiser, head of NSF's Office of International Science and Engineering. Other presenters will also share their tips and experiences on launching and maintaining internationally engaged research.

UTIA researchers have been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to evaluate regional biomass supply chains with regard to their potential for supplying feedstock for domestic fuel production as well as rural economic development, a potential game changer for farming communities.

Researchers from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are working to reduce the impact of pathogens—including the COVID-19 virus—within the built environment. Two new projects, both funded by the National Science Foundation, are helping to make that goal a reality. 
ISSE Selects 2021 Seed Grant Projects
The Office of Research and Engagement is accepting nominations for three research-related awards to be given during the Chancellor’s Honors Banquet. Nominations for faculty research awards are due by noon on Friday, January 22, 2021.
