Oklahoma City native Jess Wedel has a drive to experience every single thing she can with the tiny life she has. Her friend gave her a blank canvas after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 27 back in 2016. As her everyday life became increasingly more robotic and ruled by the goal of survival, painting became a source of uninhibited exploration and a space to be creative and curious about all that she was experiencing. Self-taught, Jess works with acrylics and primarily spends days or weeks on each piece, re-working colors and textures until her vision aligns.

The Myriad Gardens Tulip Festival
by Ron Page

I’m sure the entire Rotary 29 Club eagerly anticipates my next Reflections article dealing with growing up on a corn farm in northern Illinois, just south of the Wisconsin border. I know that to be true because when I polled a sampling of Rotary members, I was told they were really good, although no one could remember the topic, the message, or when they might have read them. I take that to mean my little essays fit the theme of Rotary so well that my messages just blended right in with “Service Above Self” and all that. The most touching compliment was from the member who vaguely recalled reading one of my articles 30 or so years ago, but was avoiding reading subsequent ones until “the right time”.

But I must disappoint!! Lauren Branch’s article two weeks ago on the topic of “Community” really inspired me to change course, so I am writing about the Myriad Gardens Tulip Festival, a really grand multi-generational, multi-cultural, multi-racial event with tens of thousands of families interacting as people eagerly volunteered to take family photos for strangers struggling to take “selfies”. It was the very definition of “community”.

I am choosing not to bring up stuff from the 1950’s such as to how we had community clubs in our farm communities and how we met in the little one room school houses where farm families enjoyed interacting with other farm families and our moms  brought “dishes to pass”, and how when a child got lost in a cornfield, a call went out to the community and everyone showed up with their flashlights to assist in the search for the lost child without regard   READ MORE

Rotary Magazine - April 2024

No country has greater instances of maternal death than Nigeria. In 2020, 82,000 pregnant women and new mothers died there. One contributing factor? Sixty percent of births in Nigeria take place outside of a hospital, making those women far more vulnerable if complications arise. In this issue of Rotary magazine, senior staff writer Diana Schoberg visits a Rotary Foundation Programs of Scale initiative addressing the problem head on.

April is Rotary Environmental Month, and we are highlighting the work of Rotarians and Rotaractors on climate change, regenerative agriculture, food waste, and more. In one of this month's feature stories, you can learn about the urban heat island effect and the Rotary members in sweltering Houston who are promoting more tree cover, "cool pavement," and other adaptations to turn down the temperature.

And in our "Where are they now?" column, conservation biologist and 2016 Rotary global grant scholar Gabi Fleury explains her approach to helping communities manage conflict with wildlife: She starts by listening.
