For Boarders
Students must have proof of a negative test before returning to campus. Boarders will quarantine January 17-20 and test on Wednesday, January 20. (Early arriving boarders are testing this afternoon.)
Testing Dates for Day Students
Tuesday, January 19, 3:15-5:00 PM: All Day Students with last name beginning with A-M or who participate in winter varsity athletics will test after the academic day. Testing will take place in Wood-Alligood Gymnasium.
Thursday January 21, 3:15-5:00 PM: All Day Students with last name beginning with N-Z will test after the academic day, between 3:15-5:00 p.m. Testing will take place in the gymnasium.

Martin Luther King, Jr. DaySAS online but in-session half day
We will have a half-day of programming on Monday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King beginning with an All-Community Gathering in the form of Chapel worship at 8:45 a.m. (students will use the Announcements link) and followed by Teach-Ins covering topics like Reconstruction, racial issues in healthcare access, the Civil Rights movement, race relations in Sewanee, student activism, voting, and more. We will then break into groups for discussion. Our class day will conclude by noon, but we encourage our students to use the afternoon in a way that is in keeping with Dr. King's important work. Students will receive the schedule and links in the coming days.

Our Online Schedule
Please help your child to remember that our daily schedule is different when our classes are online. This modified schedule is based on observations and research on how students learn online and how much continual screen time is too much. You will find class periods to be shorter when we are online. Personalized schedules including the Zoom links for their classes are available in CORE.

No Chapel on Jan 20
Because we are having a Chapel service on Monday, January 18, as part of our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and in the interest of students who may wish to watch the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, there will not be Chapel on Wednesday, Janury 20.

Congratulations to Myers Gorrell '21 on achieving Eagle Scout rank through his activities with the SAS Scout Troop.
Congratulations to Tyler Rodgers '22 on his commitment to the Tennessee National Guard. Tyler will begin his training on weekends and during summers as he prepares for service while continuing his education at SAS.

Thomas Portolano (11D) is the son of Francesco and Catherine Ramsey-Portolano '89 of Milan, Italy. He will be living with his grandparents Timothy (SMA '63) and Susan Ramsey of Monteagle, Tenn.
Reed Ruccio (11D) is the son of George and Patti Ruccio of Nashville, soon to be Monteagle, Tenn.
Anne Wiedelmann (10B) is the daughter of Thorsten Wiedelmann of Solingen, Germany.

Your Questions AnsweredHow can my child figure out when to attend Announcements, Chapel, etc.?
Your child receives daily announcements with the times, days, and links for all community meetings. At this time, these meetings don't appear on their personalized daily schedule.
Does my child have to have a PCR COVID test to return to campus?
Boarding students should have a negative COVID-19 test before returning to campus. While we would prefer that those be a PCR test, we understand that those may be difficult to get with the necessary turnaround time. If that is the case, please opt for the rapid test.
How will I find out my child's SAS COVID-19 test results?
Beginning this semester with our joint University of the South COVID-19 testing program, we will no longer be sending out individual results for each test. We are assuming negative test results and individuals will only be contacted if their test is positive. Positive results will be communicated by phone by either COVID-19 Coordinator Dan Monahan or Health Center Director Melissa Gilliam. A schoolwide email will go out when all test results have been received.
What type of COVID-19 testing is SAS using?
We are now conducting a self-administered nasal swab test and no longer using the saliva test.
How is SAS using the 4-county active COVID case rate now?
As you are probably aware, the 4-county active case rate has been well above .5% since around Thanksgiving. That was the number we had set for what would trigger us moving online. We continue to look at the active case rate and to weigh that with other factors, including healthcare capacity in our area, cases within the SAS community, our testing capacity, etc. as we make difficult decisions about when we will be inperson or online.

Meet Erica Clark
Erica Clark recently joined the SAS Advancement team as Assistant Director of Stewardship & Alumni Engagement. Erica was director of development for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for seven years and, more recently, has had a successful career in pharmaceutical sales. She holds a degree in Sociology from University of Louisiana, Monroe. Erica is a resident of South Pittsburg, a member of Christ Church Episcopal, and hopes to be an SAS parent as of Fall 2021.
