“No relationship holds greater natural potential to influence self-image, career satisfaction, and professional development than the relationship with a supervisor.”                                                                           - Patricia Harned & Michael Murphy, 1998

To Our Graduate Assistants & Supervisors

Welcome to our SDI GA-Supervisor Newsletter! We encourage you take your time reading the information below to receive important updates, explore resources, discover more about your colleagues, and seize the opportunity to have open conversations about growth & development within your team.

Graduate Assistant Evaluations for Development & Performance should be completed by Sept. 30 & submitted by Oct. 2. Check out the tips below regarding these evaluations.

Supervisors:
  • Forget everything you have been taught about evaluations!
  • The review should be about growth and development.
  • Use the evaluations to have conversations to better get to know your GA.
  • Ask your GA how you can improve your leadership as a supervisor or ask them what they need from you as a supervisor.
  • Set goals together.
  • Do not take it personal if your GA disagrees with your assessment. Rather, seek to understand why they disagree.
  • Provide your GA at least 3 days to review and sit with your feedback.
  • Send your completed evaluations to Samantha Eldridge.
GAs:
  • Forget everything you have been taught about evaluations!
  • The review should be a conversation about growth and development.
  • Set goals together.
  • It is hard to be the one being evaluated because it is personal to you; focus on what is being shared.
  • If you do not understand a score or feedback, ask follow up questions.
  • You may not receive the highest scores on your evaluation. This process helps to show your growth in your first and second year with the program and your assistant site.

Synergistic Supervision

What better way to kick off our SDI GA-Supervisor Newsletter than to focus on synergistic supervision? Winston & Creamer (1997) define synergistic supervision as the “cooperative effort between the supervisor and staff members that allows the effect of their joint efforts to be greater than the sum of their individual contributions.” Creating this cooperative effort involves centering nine components: dual focus, joint effort, two-way communication, focus on competence, growth orientation, proactivity, goal-based, systematic & ongoing process, and holism.

Supervisor Spotlight

Name: Dr. Bryan Hubain (he, him, his)
Hometown: Catries, St. Lucia, West Indies

Undergraduate: B.Sc. in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, Coppin State University

Graduate: M.Sc. inHigher Education Administration with a focus in International Education, Florida International University

Doctoral: Ph.D. in Higher Education with a concentration in Diversity and Higher Learning, University of Denver

Position: Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, Student Development & Inclusion

Hobbies: baking, kayaking, sometimes running, watching tv shows, cooking, wine tasting, sometimes hiking, traveling to new places

Thoughts on Synergistic Supervision: Synergistic supervision for me means that I can let go of my perfectionist tendencies and embrace my own learning as a supervisor in order to have a mutually beneficial relationship with my graduate assistant. There is so much that I still need to learn and my graduate assistant brings her own set of skills and experiences that allows us to be creative together and achieve goals at the highest level of excellence. She also gets to call me out on my *ish, which is of course fun!

GA Spotlight

Name: Olivia Griffin (she, her, hers)

Hometown: La Grange, IL (35 minutes from Chicago)

Undergraduate: BA in Secondary English Education, DePaul University

SA Experience: peer mentor for first-year students, peer writing tutor,
writing workshops facilitator, admissions student blogger, & Alpha Phi Omega board member

Assistantship: Student Development & Inclusion

Hobbies: Going to concerts, hanging out with my three amazing nieces, & enjoying the great outdoors

Thoughts on Synergistic Supervision: I really appreciate when a supervisor values the assets and expertise that I bring to the position while also helping me to recognize and grow in the areas where I don’t have as much knowledge and experience. The synergistic supervision model is especially powerful because it is built in that joint relationship, evoking the worth and effort of both parties. Dr. Hubain fully embraces that model by empowering me to recognize my autonomy while always providing helpful tips & feedback along the way!

Notes from Dr. Hubain

Dr. Helen Ellison.
A name that I will forever speak from these lips because of her significant impact on my life and experience being in Higher Education and Student Affairs. She was unwavering in her support of me. She also saw so much in me that I did not see in myself.
Some years ago, just before her passing, she made an across the county trip and made sure to plan a stop to see me in Denver, Colorado. During this visit she shared that one of the most important things that I should always be is authentic in my leadership. She remembered an unsure boy who created a center while in undergrad and saw me grow into myself and my identity. She shared that becoming who I am, separate from my professional identity, is the thing that would make me happiest in my roles in the future. I began striving to be who I wanted to be personally and then professionally.
Synergy between supervisor and graduate students is essential to the success of both the organization and all parties involved in the learning process. While there is a primary focus on the graduate assistant, we often do not focus on GA supervisors and their growth & development as those who are charged with guiding GAs.
A big hope and goal of mine with these newsletters is to provide opportunities to have both GAs and supervisors have open conversations about growth and development. Owning what we don’t know and learning together. We will be continuing to share important resources and reminders with you through these letters. We also are excited about many small initiatives that are in development, which are aimed at creating greater support for supervisors and graduate assistants.
